Top 10 consistently and you have the talent to compete with anyone, per my observation. It’s not like this is an exact science in terms of rating high school players for different states using different schemes against different levels of competition. Also, Bama recruits used to be good for a bump from the likes of Rival and probably others just because they were committed to Bama, thus helping to ensure #1 rankings for Bama,.

How many 3 stars from small towns the ratings agencies didn’t have the resources to fully analyze ended up being All-American?

You have to trust evaluations but the rule of thumb is like 56% blue chip players. We had the lowest ratio in quite a while when we won.

Well, I don’t trust evaluations, it even remotely. They’ve been very very wrong many many times, probably as often as they are right.

too bad we've never averged top 10 in 4 years

but we are getting close now!

Just on memory without research

I believe our previous 4 classes leading to the 2016 NC ranked around 9th

Those 4 classes were ranked 14th, 13th, 4th and 6th by Rivals.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which equals an average class ranking of 9.25***

I agree with the top 10 to stay viable. Like I said in another post a while back, the way most of the kids are rated, you can "cover the top 100 to 200 with blanket" because their talent is so close. The biggest difference is their commitment, physical development, coaching and character.

So supports what I said - top 10 on average is all you need.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1 single class doesn’t make or break it

Dec 16, 2018, 9:29 PM

But to compete for national championships you should be signing at least as many 4 and 5 stars as 3 or lower.

That’s the Blue Chip Ratio and I believe no team with a BCR lower than 50% has won a national championship this decade. And generally if you sign more blue chips than 3*’s you’re going to have a top 10-15 class

There's some weird stat that every school who has won a Natty

Dec 16, 2018, 9:37 PM

has had a #1 recruiting class within 3 years of winning the Natty except for 2 schools over the last 15 years.

Clemson and Auburn. (And Auburn had Cam Newton)

Clemson did have a top 5 class leading up to the Natty. ND is by far the "least talented" team to make the playoff over the last 5 years if we are talking recruiting rankings.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Basically, recruiting rankings matter a lot.

Dec 16, 2018, 9:39 PM

But you certainly have to develop that talent and have a very capable QB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Understandably.....

Dec 16, 2018, 9:48 PM

Higher rated classes are a plus! But, they don’t make up for:

1. Character
2. Being ALL IN
3. Solid work ethic
4. Commitment
5. Integrity

And most importantly, irregardless of “Stars”....

6. Total embracement of the Clemson culture!

The system our coaches have put in place is what has us at the top. Not the rankings of the classes themselves.

We have “missed” (more like passed on) some really high level, elite talent per the recruiting sites. Has that mattered at all?? NO!

Trust the system!

Go Tigers!!!

The past 7 champs

Dec 16, 2018, 10:19 PM

Have all averaged a top 10 class over the previous 4 classes and all 7 have at least 1 top 4 class in the 2 years prior to the title.

It's important.

2018 BLUE-CHIP RATIOS:Clemson-61%(52%-2016NC),ND-51%, OK-53% ALA(1)77%; (FSU-(2)76%). BCR50%or greater is an identifiable requisite condition only- 50%of 85 man roster must be 4&5 Stars to win

Rankings weigh size of class as well as ave*rating, discounting the value of the difference makers and are misleading-best check ave star rating when observing recruiting rankings

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Link

Dec 17, 2018, 12:10 AM

Was surprised that nobody had mentioned quality over quantity earlier. Clemson operates a little differently than most which suppresses the number of recruits, therefore, suppressing the rating.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

top 10 gives you the opportunity to compete......

Dec 17, 2018, 10:43 AM

then must have the coaching, cohesion, etc... to win it all.

since 2005 (per rivals)
-of the teams that "competed for" (ie in National title game and/or playoffs) 23 teams had a top 10 recruiting average the 4 years leading up to their NC/playoff appearance. The remaining 15 teams had a top 25 average the 4 years leading up to their appearance (most of which top 15 average)

-Of the 38 teams that have been in the picture for a NC (ie NC game and/or playoffs) 32 of them had at least 1 top 10 recruiting class in the 4 years leading up to that appearance.

basically Stars DO matter, but as long as we consistently land top 10 classes and our coaching staff stays elite we should be "in the conversation" and capable of competing for one every year
