OT: Mexico

Steve won a trip to Mexico through his work. We stayed at the grand Hyatt in playa del Carmen. Hotel itself was nice;however, the Hyatt leases a corner of its beach area & a small area on the end of the hotel to “private adult club” now this “club” was really young girls twerking from 11:00am-7:00pm every day. They were dressed with very little clothing, had stripper pole and all. They had put up a wall they covered with AstroTurf so people by the pool couldn’t see in. However, our room was on the 2nd floor and our balcony was right over this club. They played that music, which all sounded the same, as loud as the volume would go the entire time. “Massages”were available of course. With the exception of a 5* restaurant inside the hotel all of the food was horrible and I thought I liked Mexican food. They (chef) also did not know the difference between MSG and gluten. Last night at the banquet they had a good meal and they had been alerted that I am anaphylaxis allergic to msg, they informed me I couldn’t have what everyone else was getting but brought me out some seaweed dish. Come to find out they thought the two were one and the same. Sorry for dissertation, but just getting home and I haven’t washed it off of me yet. Yes I could have changed rooms, but we had already unpacked everything and had it all put in their places and I thought “how much time will we spend in the room” I now know considerably more than I thought. My recommendation is vacation anywhere but Mexico. I would even recommend Venezuela over them

Go to Manny's on Calle 4. It's German and I honestly can't tell you if the food is good. That's because his homemade tequilla is the best in Mexico. I hear that the food is good, but I'll guarantee the tequilla is fantastic.

Bad generalization

You went to a prime spring break destination during spring break and you're complaining about young people playing loud music and a restaurant that doesn't understand food. Sure - because the clientele is just there to drink.
Next time don't go during Spring Break and let me suggest Puerto Vallarta. A lot of fun, good food, and good people. But much of the world lacks the wealth we have which allows us to worry about MSG and Gluten. They have far bigger problems.

The OP could literally die from exposure to MSG.

Please stop making it out to be a “first world problem.” Any restaurant today should be able to provide a dish without MSG, especially at a 4-5 star resort.

Yeah it is a first world problem - especially a US issue. I travel a lot and I can tell you in much of Europe - yeah they get MSG, gluten not so much. Even vegetarian will often get an eye roll. It's ok, we have our things, they have theirs.
And what's your point anyway? I wasn't saying the hotel or restaurant was great. I was commenting on someone writing off the entire country because of a hotel restaurant. You onboard with that?

I travel to Mexico City often and love it there. Never had a bad meal so far.
Interestingly, even though I stay in a nice hotel in what I think is a nice area three blocks from our office, the local staff insist they escort me as I walk to and from the office. I’ve never felt unsafe, but they insist I could get kidnapped at any moment.

I’m in TJ as we speak and the food is phenomenal. Me and my chica had tacos that would create a riot if they served them on the streets in the USA. The culture is different so you cannot expect it to conform to your local customs
