Week 8 Prodigal Football Ratings
Oct 21, 2019, 12:50 PM

Ohio St. is still well out in front. Have they played a single down of interesting football this year? They are just rolling teams, quietly. I haven't watched a game, and I don't think I've even seen a highlight. They might as well be wearing orange this year, and I'd never know it.
After Ohio St., the teams are starting to separate a bit. Wisconsin dropped out of the picture, and the other top teams shuffled around with wins on Saturday. SMU had another good win Saturday, dominating Temple. Three of their next four games are at Houston, at Memphis, and at Navy. If they run that, they should be in the same position as UCF has been in recent years, arguing, deservedly, for a spot at the adult table.

Ha! The whole point is to completely avoid eye tests!

That's not to say I don't think the "eye test" is important. But like you said, I like seeing what numbers say, in an objective way. It helps in cases where my eyes don't always see.
This rating is extremely simplistic, only going by wins/losses, and points scored/allowed. What I like about it is that it presents an objective comparison of schedules, as opposed to just saying "they haven't played anybody". This rating actually adds up the records of all the opponents.

the SOS is based off of what has already happened right?

like wins and losses of opponents that you've already played or all opponents on your schedule?

I do have a "remaining schedule" strength calculated for each team, that I don't normally post here.

For example, one would assume Alabama has played

better teams than SMU. But according to the math, that's arguable at best. SMU has a higher SOS according to my formula, and also a much higher remaining SOS! It is extremely likely they will finish with a tougher schedule than Alabama. These ratings don't care what conference a team is in, it's just wins and losses.
The only reason Alabama is ranked higher than SMU in my rating is that Alabama has more thoroughly dominated their opponents (scoring margin).

Looking at SOS, its amazing how you can come up with something that is relatively honest way to look at results, however the people who are almighty and in charge cannot seemingly put together any resemblance of a Top 25.

Because THE osu is well, THE osu, they'll probably get a #1

ranking next week, and will stay there as they continue to play the powerhouses of St luke's school of the blind and the Fighting Northwestern Insurance Salesmen.
My only hope is that maybe Wisconsin or The Penn St kid touchers brutally take out THE osu, and maybe the Fighting Harboughs can do the same the following week just to shut the rest of THE osu fans up.

It's wins and losses...their opponents are 27-14

when not playing Ohio St., which is a very good number. This includes 6-0 Cincinnati, 5-1 Indiana, 4-2 Michigan St., 4-2 Nebraska, 4-2 FAU. So while they haven't played any elite teams yet, they've played several decent to good teams. And it helps tremendously in my rating that they are one of the few teams who haven't played an FCS school. That really hurts my SOS rating.

To not remember the great Nebraska program. Eric Crouch's squad, when I was a teenager, was pretty much the last of it, I think.

This is funny...the only team who has had any lead on OSU

this season is the worst team on their schedule, Miami (OH). Miami led the Buckeyes 5-0 in the first quarter. The game ended 76-5.
