If I had to choose a weakness to have on this team, punter would be the best option IMO. If he does not get many chances to kick it then I say there is a great chance we win those games!! It is definitely a weakness though, and could hurt us against competition in the CFP.

At least he's not out kicking his coverage. He seems pretty fundamental to me, and I would think it would be hard to switch to rugby style kicking under pressure.

Was he a legit prospect in HS?
Not trying to pile on but I have a hard time thinking as a perennial CFP team there isn’t a top punter who wouldn’t like to showcase his talents with us.

We have number one punter in nation committed for 2019. Spires does a decent job was q.b and jack of all trades in high school. He is doing some things most people don’t notice. If you look at fumble on punt against FSU he held ball when they didn’t rush and took a couple steps right to give coverage time. This is a set play that most people can’t accomplish.

Sometimes hang time can compensate for distance. The Louisville punter had a high punt with excellent hang time and his punts were not that long. The cover guys were at our punt returner when the ball got there.
I have never understood why punters are given 20 yards on their average punt when it goes into the end zone. That's an automatic return of 20 yards to the 20 yard line. Why not credit the receiving team with a 20 yard return as well? Would it not be more effective to have a "coffin corner" kick that goes out of bounds inside the 20 yard line?

We have been working real hard to eliminate problem punts and it has been working the last 4 weeks! Look forward to cutting them out all together by the last game of the season!
