Tiger players pulling for opponents ... another perspective

A Clemson baseball player was heard/seen cheering for the Terps football team in Death Valley during a game back the 1970s in the portal right beside where coaches and coaches families sat.
Coach Bill Wilhelm listened for a few minutes before he leapt up, ran down and immediately kicked the guy off the baseball team. He was furious with the kid for doing what he did.
It’s a true story ... I saw it happen. I agreed with Coach Wilhelm.
Just food for thought re: the Cornell Powell incident.

Dabo is a different type of coach; he is one of a kind.

I don't know exactly what the guy was doing, but being obnoxious near the coaches' families is much different than sitting at a game wearing a shirt.
Also based on your viewpoint, you have no idea what other issues that player may have had prior to that incident that played into Coach Wilhelm's decision.

Actually I DO know the details. I was sitting right beside Coach when he came back up to the seats after the incident.
Dabo won’t kick Powell off for the situation and he probably shouldn’t. Coach Wilhelm was a much more volatile personality and it was a different era.
Still, if you’re a scholarship Clemson athlete, wearing gear from an opponent at a big game is always going to be a bad look.

So that was the only issue the player ever had?
Your original post made it seem as though you thought Dabo should kick Powell off the team.
I was stating the differences between the situations with Powell sitting quietly with his buddies and the baseball player actively cheering near coaches' families.

No, the guy was a typical Terp fan who somehow made his way onto the Clemson baseball team. He was already a jackazz and the cheering against Clemson was sorta the last straw.
Still, I maintain that a Clemson scholarship athlete sporting UNC gear at a Clemson vs UNC basketball game is a very poor look and should not happen.
That’s just my personal opinion.

I don't remember that happening.

But I wouldn't be surprised. Bill Wilhelm was "all in", and expected all his players to be too.
There'll never be another one like him.

How about this odd take on the situation, these kids come from different states and grew up cheering for a different team but committed to PLAY FOOTBALL for Clemson. Instead of Dabo being ignorant and forcing them to like a team they didn't come here for they are allowed to be free thinkers even if it doesn't make sense to him because he's smart enough to know there's nothing wrong with an individual cheering for a team they grew up watching.

I grew up "watching" a girl named Tina....had her picture on my wall etc. I wound up marrying a girl named Sandra. I don't have Tina's picture anymore nor do I "watch her" any longer. If I wanted to do that I would have married Tina. Get it?

No because that's an bad comparison. It's like being friends with Jim and marrying Sandra so you stop hanging out with Jim. They don't correlate. What your saying is like him cheering for Alabama football when he plays them.
