The regular season matters in CFB

Dec 11, 2018, 9:00 AM

One of the reasons that so many people love college football is because each and every game matters enormously. If you lose one game by 20+ points, that can cost you your shot at a championship. If you lose one game to your undefeated division rival, you don't go to your championship game. Every game matters.

If you add teams to the playoffs, then you make CFB more like the NFL, MLB, NCAA baseball, NBA, etc... all you've got to do is just win enough to make it to the playoffs and then you can get hot and win it all. That is not how CFB has ever been and not what it should become.

4 teams is the right number. You say "let them settle it on the field"... well what have they been doing for the last 12 games of the regular season?

The CFP has gotten it right every single year. Their goal is to find the single best team in the country. The only reason we have 2-4 is because there is a good chance that 2-3 other teams have a good argument at having been the best team all year long.

Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame would all have a claim at being the national champion this year (if there was no CFP). Oklahoma has the next best claim. Now we have given these 4 teams the opportunity to settle it on the field. Not a single other team in the country can claim that they have been the best team all season long. OSU lost by 29 to a mediocre team. UGA lost 2 games and doesn't have a conference championship.

My only gripe with the CFP is that UCF or another G5 team needs to be given a shot eventually. UCF needs to actually schedule some opponents with a pulse though.

You're argument is no better than any1 elses

I say OSu has more validity than ND or UGA in spite of the Purdue game.

Who is right? Both of us are right. None of us are right.

UGA and OSU only have themselves to blame for LOSING

I don’t “think” ND is better but losing is something they haven’t done and that’s why they’re in the playoff.

OSU won the same amount of games as ND

False.

Does OSU have more validity at claiming a National Championship than Clemson or Alabama? If not, then it doesn't matter.

We are looking for a SINGLE National Champion. Not 2, not 3, not 4. It is about finding the ONE team that has been the best all season long. There is a 99% chance that the best ONE team all season long is Clemson or Alabama. The CFP is about letting the teams that have a valid argument for being the National Champion settle it on the field.

If Clemson had lost to Cuse and got bumped out by UGA

Dec 11, 2018, 9:56 AM

Would you feel the same way?

The committee would've said, unfortunately, Clemson only played 2 teams who finished in the Top 25 and one of those was a loss.

UGA had multiple top 25 wins and had control against the #1 team for most of the game. We think UGA is one of the 4 best teams.
