Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Good gosh the derp spin going on these days is insane.

The guy who denied service to gay people wasn't ruined. He won. The Supreme Court ruled in his favor...not just along partisan lines, he won 7-2. Lot of people didn't like it...well, too bad. They can whine all they want, but the ruling stands: the courts won't force a private businessman to serve gays if it violates his own religious expression. Considering the vast bulk of wedding business is always going to be people seeking traditional weddings, I think he'll be fine. As they say in Vegas, all publicity is ultimately good publicity. You can't buy advertising presence like this guy got.

That's a huge victory for the right, stop whining somebody's being victimized. THE RIGHT WON THIS BATTLE, AND THEY WON IT BIG. Lordy. And honestly...this was the correct ruling, IMHO. If the dude doesn't wanna do gay wedding cakes, is it the government's place to point a gun at his head and force him to?

No. And common sense, ultimately, prevailed here. Nobody can argue a wedding cake is anything resembling a vital basic service.

The Red Hen just did the same...but in reverse. Literally, in reverse. The instigators here were apparently largely gay waiters (if you've ever waited tables, you'd know there's a bunch of them in restaurant work), and there's also going to be a lot of minorities working most restaurants as well. This restaurant staff - who obviously feel like they aren't exactly being represented, in any particular, by the Trump administration - decided they didn't want to serve Sarah Sanders because of her politics, some of which are...controversial. To put it mildly. Considering every Trump Administration photo I've ever seen looks like a Straight Old White dude revival, you can kind of understand why anyone who isn't a Straight Old White Guy tends to feel kind of...hostile, towards the Trump regime, right now. It isn't exactly inclusive. In fact it's gone out of its way not to be.

Well, the law isn't going to force this establishment to serve Sarah Sanders - who is the mouthpiece of the most deliberately controversial administration in recent American history - with their own hands either. And guess what: once again, it isn't the government's job to put a gun to their head and force them to. Again, dinner at the Red Hen is nothing remotely resembling a "vital basic service".

It works both ways.

And people who have a problem with either viewpoint maybe need to take a breath and do what nobody's bothering to do right now: see the other side. Blue-collar, working-class America, and those with more traditional values - feel like they're being taken for a ride...and they're right. The plight of the working class gets worse every year.

On the other hands, minorities of feel like they're being marginalized and pushed aside to an unacceptable degree - on purpose - by the current administration...and they're right too.

The solution isn't to blame one another. Turning on one another isn't going to get us anywhere we wanna go. The biggest strength of America has always been our unity...and our ability to evolve and fix our problems.

If calmer heads on both sides don't start prevailing sometime soon, we're going to have some serious social strife on our hands we haven't seen since probably the '60's, or maybe even the Civil War.

Is that what we're after here?

It is different

Jun 29, 2018, 4:17 PM [ in reply to Re: The guy that threw chicken excrement at the Red Hen ]

Gays are a protected class. You can not deny them service based upon them being gay. What you don't have to do it make a special gay cake for them. You do have to sell them a cake off of the shelf if they want it.

You can deny Sanders service at a restaurant because she is not a member of a protected class. You can't deny gays service at a restaurant because you don't like gay people.

It isn't different.

Gays, legally, are no more "protected" than anyone else. They didn't deny Sanders service because she was white, female, or straight. It was personal beef. Restaurants have the right to deny service to anyone, they just can't do it on the basis of race, sexuality, or gender.

I did it myself, a couple of times back when I waited tables. Most waiters have. Including to one particularly obnoxious, drunk black dude who was being a straight-up jerk to everyone, and who started with the words "listen up, mother______"...I'll let you fill in the blanks. It was legal because I didn't toss him because he was black (I could have cared less), I tossed him because he was drunk, abusive, and making a scene. The manager ended up calling the cops on him, and they escorted him out, with him cursing and carrying on the whole time. I also refused service one time with a family member who I wasn't seeing eye-to-eye with and who liked public drama; rather than let them start a scene where I worked, I just had the manager quietly ask them to go.

As long as it isn't discrimination, you can refuse service. Same thing as baking a cake. Now, if the restaurant in question had had a front counter like Cracker Barrel does and Sarah Sanders had walked up and tried to buy something, I think they likely would have had to sell it to her, or legally they would have been on much shakier footing. (Especially when what you're selling is food...that is covered by the "vital service or staple" protections clause, I'm pretty sure...maybe a legal expert could sound off here if I'm wrong on this. And if she had ordered take-out, I think even that likely would have been protected.)

The Red Hen wasn't "discriminating" against Sanders. They just had a beef with her personally and refused service, as was their right. And that is legal. Just as it's legal for half their customer base to be annoyed with them, and refuse to frequent the place as a result...which is also likely going to happen.

I respectfully disagree with you about Sarah Sanders. Her case was very
different than the ones that you described. Come on, you don't kick someone
out just because you don't like them. We will be sorry if we get to that in
this country.

The guy had to stop making wedding cakes for EVERYBODY.

Jun 30, 2018, 7:35 PM [ in reply to Re: The guy that threw chicken excrement at the Red Hen ]

Wedding cakes was the biggest part of his business so he almost had to close if not for he people rallying around him who believe everybody has individual rights.
