Why do baseball coaches wear uniforms?..

Apr 10, 2019, 6:55 PM

Football coaches don’t wear uniforms. Neither do basketball coaches. It’s not like they are going to play or something. What is the need for them to wear uniforms? Just wondering.

I suspect it's just tradition, and why or how it started, nobody knows. I agree with you that it looks ridiculous, all these old men in uniform, and I can't think of another sport where the coaches/managers wear the same as the players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I actually think hockey coaches look the most ridiculous

Apr 10, 2019, 7:05 PM

They wear suits and stand behind the bench. Look completely out of place, like a guy who just happened to wander in there.

Many coaches and managers were actually just captains of the teams and often were players.

Plus wouldn’t a business suit look funny waving a runner through third?

Well it would distract from the game if they showed up naked!?!?

It's tradition - way back when the owners..........

Apr 10, 2019, 7:23 PM

were also the general managers as there wasn't the structure to a baseball organization there is today. It's just stuck over the years and become tradition.

Kind of like head football coaches always used to wear suits. Now you hardly ever see a head football coach wearing a suit.

It's mixed in basketball - some wear suits and some don't.

Re: Why do baseball coaches wear uniforms?..

Apr 10, 2019, 7:32 PM

According to John Thorn, the official historian of Major League Baseball since 2011, it goes back to the earliest days of the game. Back then, the person known as the manager was the business manager: the guy who kept the books in order and the road trips on schedule. Meanwhile, the guy we call the manager today, the one who arranges the roster and decides when to pull a pitcher, was known as the captain. In addition to managing the team on the field, he was usually also on the team as a player. For many years, the “manager” wore a player’s uniform simply because he was a player. There were also a few captains who didn’t play for the team and stuck to making decisions in the dugout, and they usually wore suits.

With the passing of time, it became less common for the captain to play, and on most teams they took on strictly managerial roles. Instead of suits proliferating throughout America’s dugouts, though, non-playing captains largely hung on to the tradition of wearing a player's uniform. By the early to mid 20th century, wearing the uniform was the norm for managers, with a few notable exceptions. The Philadelphia Athletics’s Connie Mack and the Brooklyn Dodgers’s Burt Shotton continued to wear suits and ties to games long after it fell out of favor (though Shotton sometimes liked to layer a team jacket on top of his street clothes). Once those two retired, it’s been uniforms as far as the eye can see.

Why do basketball coaches (typically) wear suits?..

Apr 10, 2019, 9:36 PM

I've often wondered.

There was a time when football coaches wore suits too. As best as I can recall, Al Golden was the last guy to do that (learned from Joe Paterno).

Practical:
Most baseball coaches are active in pre-game warmups: batting and infield practice

Historical
Many coaches were also on the active team roster. This was especially true in semi-pro and minor leagues where most players were groomed.

Re: Why do baseball coaches wear uniforms?..

Apr 11, 2019, 8:29 AM

i think it is a very old tradition based on the idea that the coach could conceivably still be a player who just happened to have been picked to lead the team, so he could possibly still come into the game to play at some point. I just seem to remember something like that from the Ken Burns documentary.
