You have to maintain the catch all the way to the ground

Jan 11, 2015, 4:08 PM

That's the rule, and that didn't happen. Don't hate the call, hate the rule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That rule must change. He had the ball the whole way.

Jan 11, 2015, 4:12 PM

The ball may have touched the ground, but Dez had the ball the whole way.

Re: You have to maintain the catch all the way to the ground

Jan 11, 2015, 10:45 PM [ in reply to You have to maintain the catch all the way to the ground ]

You have to maintain the catch to the ground if you don't make a football move. He made 3. They called what they called and we lost. Won't hear me complain just stating a fact.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looked like he did maintain control of the ball

Jan 12, 2015, 12:26 AM [ in reply to You have to maintain the catch all the way to the ground ]

all the way to the ground. That's what caused the ball to jar loose - the ground. It looked like a catch every time I saw the replay.

Re: it was too good of a catch , therefore , it was not a catch

Jan 11, 2015, 4:17 PM

He had possession when his elbow touched the ground, making him down by contact at the 1 yard line (as it was called on the field). This "completing the process" stuff is just nonsense enabling more games to be decided by the officials. The rule needs to be changed and soon. Play ends when a player is down, out of bounds, or has possession of the ball in the opposing end zone. I don't understand why there needs to be subjectivity involved.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. Pulling for GB, that that was a catch.

Jan 11, 2015, 4:10 PM

If that was not a catch, there is something wrong with football. The rules need to be changed to make that a catch.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To establish a catch you must have two feet in bounds

Jan 11, 2015, 4:13 PM

And complete one of the following
Make a football move- that didn't happen
If you do not make a football move you must complete the catch all the way to the ground-ground-ground- that didn't happen

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What the heck is a football move? 2 steps should be enough***

He completed 3 moves. 2 steps and a dive for the pylon. Glad we have so many awesome refs on Tnet.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He did make the football move - he tried to stretch

Jan 11, 2015, 4:28 PM

he jumped 62 feet in the air ,and caught the ball with two hands, brought the ball down , feet good, extended, hit the ground while cradling the ball firmly in his right hand , as he rolled over from hitting the ground , the ball came loose, never touching the ground after it came loose, stayed close to his body , and he caught it back with both hands while he was on his back . .the ref was there , and we all saw it in real time, it was a great catch ,

Re: That was a catch ....

Jan 11, 2015, 4:30 PM

It doesn't matter how many steps he took. He was always going to ground in the process of making the catch. Once the ball hit the ground and moved, it becomes incomplete.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That was a catch ....

Jan 11, 2015, 10:48 PM

That rule only applies if no football move is made like a receiver tapping his feet in bounds then falling out of bounds without taking a step. Dez took 2 steps jumped extended and hit the ground with his knee and stomach after contact from the defender then the ball came out.

Read my posts from earlier I stated we lost. You won't hear me complain like you whiny ####### did last week. I'm just stating it was a catch. Heck we could have scored a TD and Rogers could have gone down the field and beat us anyway. Not once have you seen me type the refs cost us this game. Things could be worse though, I could pull for the Panthers. Thank God that ain't gonna happen! Besides we had many chances to put that game away in the 3rd quarter and didn't do it. It is our own fault we lost.

If Green frozen had the ball, this pass, would have been ruled a catch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wasn't a catch...

Jan 11, 2015, 4:33 PM

Since he didn't possess it all the way through and the ground knocked it out it's incomplete. Even though he caught it after it bounced out it is incomplete. It would've been complete if it had bounced out off of his chest or arm, but since the ground pushed it out it's incomplete.

Re: That was a catch ....

Jan 11, 2015, 4:42 PM

Dez basically got robbed because he extended his arm reaching for the goal line. If that same exact play would have happened at midfield he would have just tucked it in and it would have been a complete pass. If he hadn't had control of the ball then he wouldn't have had the control to stretch his arm out. Dumb rule cost Dallas big time, and I'm not a Dallas fan at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That was a catch ....

I thought it was a catch. His right elbow was down before the ball came loose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That was a catch ....

Jan 11, 2015, 5:15 PM

The NFL needs to revise this rule. The man took two and a half steps after controlling the ball, on his way to the ground. At what point does the other rule "Ground can't cause a fumble" start to overlap this situation?

And for the record, I intensely dislike the Cowboys, ever since Jerry Jones forced out Tom Landry the way he did. However, they still got screwed over today.

Re: That was a catch ....

Jan 11, 2015, 5:57 PM

If this happened to Mike Williams on a Saturday would anyone agree it wasn't a catch? lol. By rule it wasn't a catch, but its a stupid rule. I would think making a catch at the 5 and 4 1/2 yards later stretching for the endzone the ground knocked it loose....should go down as the "ground can't cause a fumble" rule than the incomplete rule. But...it is what it is. Convenient that game would come down to a call after 57 mins of classic football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"....but one play doesn't determine a game."

Jan 11, 2015, 6:19 PM

I stole that quote from last week.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: "....but one play doesn't determine a game."

Jan 11, 2015, 6:22 PM

I know one play doesn't determined the game, that why I said I pay attention to the whole game and not watch it with one eye closed. The Murray fumble with daylight to score, giving up a TD on 3rd and 15, a 6 pt swing before the half and not recovering the Cobb fumble on the kickoff while up 8 all factored in Dallas losing. All that call did was ruin the chance of an epic ending, it didn't cost Dallas the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

sorry, I misinterpreted the nuances of your quote:

Well it was from the Deer Dallas fans thread, but you still shouldn't read with one eye closed either. I clearly stated the plays that cost them the game in the long run. Something Det fans don't like to look at...the rest of the game.

This topic was based just on "The No Catch" and I just based my opinion on why I thought it should have been. But Dallas had plenty of chances to blow it open and it this "No Catch" scenario would have never taken place.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Change the 'rule' btw who needs a rule here?

Jan 11, 2015, 7:36 PM

Just an engineer so I am probably not as smart as any info rules guru, but how is it that in spite of this phantom, esoteric & theoretical 'football move' - a receiver can snag a ball going out of bounds and it is a catch? Questioning mind while I agree Dallas did other things to lose this game before this one play.
