Coaches didn't know who bresee was on his 1st visit

Apr 23, 2019, 3:12 PM

aaccording to him The staff misnamed him and showed him no attention his 1st time on campus. Thats absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. He's the #1 recruit in the nation. If thats his first impression. How is everyone else's going going to be? I'm glad it worked out this time but its basic human decency to know and respect the names of the players you're recruiting.

Its not though...bresee said himself that his 1st visit was so bad he nearly never came back

Apr 23, 2019, 3:51 PM [ in reply to Re: Coaches didn't know who bresee was on his 1st visit ]

Are you getting this from CBS sports? What’s the source? - 247 article lists the weird encounter with an off field recruiting guy, not a coach... “Breese’s recruitment to Clemson didn’t get off to the best start. Prior to his junior year on his first visit, an off-field recruiting guy confused Bresee with 2019 five-star George Karlaftis, saying numerous times how he loved the fact that he was on kickoff coverage making plays.

“He kept saying it and saying it, and finally I said I don’t have any plays on my film from kickoff,” Bresee said, adding he also spent just a minute with Swinney, took a picture and left.

Bresee found the whole visit “odd” and the next day was at Georgia where he was showered with love. It seemed like Clemson was out of this recruitment before it even really got rolling.

“I honestly wasn’t planning on coming back for a second visit,” Bresee said.

Obviously Bresee couldn’t ignore the production on the field. Clemson was hoisting trophies, the d-line was arguably the nation’s best and assistant coaches Todd Bates and Mike Reed quickly found out something was off from the first visit and worked hard to build a rapport with Bresee from that time on. Bresee figured he’d go back and check it out one more time, so he attended the win over South Carolina at the end of this past fall.

Game-changer.“

If it can happen to the #1 player in the nation. Im sure it can happen to anyone of the 3-4 stars the coaches have on campus.

It was an off field recruiting guy, probably from tci.***

Even still its unacceptable. Now I know Dabo doesn't have time to handle everyone personally, but if someone is giving recruits tours its important to know the recruits you're touring well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It was an off field recruiting guy, probably from tci.***

Apr 23, 2019, 3:37 PM

He said himself that Clemson were really only looking at the older guys at that time. This was last year. Plus they don’t hand out offers until they see you, talk to you, and evaluate you. He said himself that he got an offer automatically after they talked to him. He said the other schools offered him as soon as he showed up. We all know Clemson doesn’t operate like that. Get out your feelings.

Im not a troll. Thats his actual words. I just think that treatment is overall unacceptable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Questioning the process of Dabo and staff is ridiculous.

Apr 23, 2019, 5:32 PM

“Unacceptable” is not a term that applies in the least.

If you feel so strongly about this,

1

you could reach out to Dabo personally and let him know his program’s recruiting process is unacceptable.

(and can you please make sure I can watch or listen in?)

Apr 23, 2019, 3:32 PM

and Spurrier brushed him off because he wasn't on the official visitor list.

McMillan claimed he had some interest in playing for the OBS before that happened. Fortunately things worked out well for him.

And as for the Bresee story, there may be some truth to it but I suspect you've exaggerated it.

Re: That reminds me of the time Raekwon McMillan visited uofsc

Apr 23, 2019, 3:36 PM

Its literally his own words. They didn't know who he was and thought he was some kickoff specialist even though he's never been on Kickoff. He said he barely got to see any of the coaches and overall had a horrible visit. He said if we weren't as successful as we were especially on the D line he never would've came back.

Yeah you’re right. Clemson recruiting is and has been on a real downward spiral. We need to be really worried about the future of Clemson football.

It also said that Mike Reed and Todd Bates immediately

went to work to make amends and set things straight. Everybody makes mistakes. What you do make it right is usually more important than the mistake.

McMillan told the Spurrier story in an NFL draft interview after he graduated from Ohio State. He was pretty sure no one in Columbia ever figured out that he had been to one of their recruiting weekends.

It probably wasn't even a coach. As he said, it was an off-field recruiting guy. Probably that dang Mickey Plyler.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

Im not pretending the coaches cant coach championship teams, but lets not pretend Clemson has a strong tradition of bringing in top recruiting classes. Things like this could be why... Would you feel like it was fine if he had went a different direction and made that his reason why?

By not bringing in top classes, are you talking about landing Lawrence instead of Fields? Wilkins and Big Dex instead of Gary?

I'm not going to argue with you about Dabo and his coaches ability to recruit. If they are doing it wrong...it wouldn't be fair if they ever started doing it right.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To be fair

Apr 23, 2019, 6:14 PM

We don't know what Justin fields is yet. Im more than happy with Trevor Lawrence, but who's to say we wouldn't have been equally happy with fields? He has that type of talent...and Same for Gary. I love our D line its the best in history you ask me, but Gary starts over Austin Bryant 10/10 times. and I love Austin Bryant as a player. This isn't a knock against the staff. I just think as a Clemson sports talk board. We are allowed to criticize bad moves by the staff and not knowing who the number 1 recruit in the nation was on their 1st visit is a bad move. Its rare but it happens.

What? Clemson has had several top 10 classes with a few in the top 5 under Dabo. Clemson has signed countless 4 and 5 star guys under this staff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh - I don’t know about that - brrn ... Clemson is one of the few teams ...

Apr 24, 2019, 4:41 AM [ in reply to Re: Coaches didn't know who bresee was on his 1st visit ]
