I heard this from the late, great Jim Phillips

Sep 17, 2019, 10:43 PM

Since some have been talking about the "rotten dudes" of pro sports - Antonio Brown, Michael Vick, etc - thought I'd mention this one from Mr. Phillips:

Jim & I had worked together since 1980 & continued until he passed. He told me this one around '97 or so. Personal experience he had.

Jim was a huge baseball fan - loved Cleveland (which always made me feel sorry for him - especially since the Braves beat 'em in the W.S.). But, Jim loved baseball so much, he even liked the top players from Cincinnati. Growing up in Ohio - anybody that was good at sports from "O-H-I-O" - Jim appreciated.

Jim happened to be in the same town as Johnny Bench - maybe late '80s, early 90s. Jim didn't know it, but Bench not only was in the same town, he was staying in the same HOTEL.

Phillips found out by accident via the elevator. On the way down to the lobby, the elevator stopped on another floor & in walked Johnny Bench. Jim couldn't resist, so he said, "Johnny Bench? Jim Phillips. I just wanted to say I've always been a big fan...." (Jim went on complimenting Bench until the elevator reached the lobby).

Bench hadn't said a word for the 20 seconds or so Jim had been praising him. But, when the elevator doors opened at the lobby, Jim said Bench started walking out, turned & said to Jim - ".....Like I give a f#@$#...."

Phillips said from that day on, in his mind, Johnny Bench was a PoS. He was laughing when he told that one. "Can you believe that &$!?$# SAID that to me???"

Are we not fortunate to have a coach like Dabo who's sincerity is on display 24/7?

I wish there had been someone there to have knocked Bench's teeth down his throat and spit in his face. How dare that POS SOB disrespect a great man that Jim Phillips was. Bench didn't deserve to be in the same room that Jim had just walked out of. Apparently, nobody ever informed B!tch Bench that without the fans, he wouldn't have a job making the money he got paid, and especially back in those days!!!

furniture market, I walked into a showroom and learned that they had hired Johnny Bench for a few days to greet and meet customers.

Finding him sitting at a bar watching TV in the showroom, I introduced myself and took a seat next to him. Although somewhat of a cold fish with a G.A.S. personality, I was stunned with the size of his hands, which seemed to be twice the size of an average man's.

Never being overwhelmed with stardom and realizing we were the same age, I remarked, "Well, no wonder you were so dang good as a catcher with those mitts." That brought out a guffaw from him and several others.

And as for Jim Phillips, he arrived before I graduated, and I've always been happy that I had the chance to meet him.

Hartins - thanks for the Johnny Bench post. You must have caught JB in a good mood - in a bar.

I've never met him, but your comment about his gigantic hands goes for a lot of pro athletes. The NBA guys I've met fall in that category often. It's a little like, "Not only is this guy almost 7-feet - his hands are like tennis rackets!"

A small percentage of pros in any sport have attitudes. Most are pretty nice & realize it's not smart (& just plain wrong) to treat others poorly. One friend of mine had a great way of measuring someone's character: "Watch how they treat the servers in restaurants." I've found that to be a good indicator.

Sorry if this hits close to home, but William "Fridge" Perry

Sep 18, 2019, 9:26 AM

In 1980 while a student at Clemson , I had a part time gig at "Channelo's Pizza downtown. Many of you are probably to young to remember Channelo's, but we were the home of the greatest Versuvian Steak Sandwich in the world.

Anyway, one of my regular customer's was none other than the "Fridge". He lived in married student housing, one of the little duplexes down the hill towards Sikes hall. He had a sweet wife and a beautiful little girl that I assume was about 2 years old. About once every week or two , we would get his order for our 28" Party pizza all the way for him, and a small 10" cheese pizza for his wife and daughter.

I delivered the pies to him and was always a bit in awe as I walked up to deliver the pizzas. Anyway, he never tipped a dime and never responded at all to my congrats about a positive comment about a particular wicked sack etc. It never really bothered me that "he" didnt tip, as I thought it was pretty cool that I got to take hime the pizzas. I guess I was a bit star struck.

Roll the clock forward 20+ years , and I was at a national executive conference called RSA at the navy pier in Chicago, and who is one the show floor "booth guest". A lot of companies vie for your attention at these events by paying someone to sit in their booth and sign autographs
. In one of the booths , who was sitting there , non other than the "Fridge" wearing a #72 Bears jersey (not a #66 Clemson Jersey). He was signing little plastic footballs. #72 , Fridge etc

I decided , with a little of the excitement of delivering the pizza, that I would get a ball signed. Waited about 10 minutes , got up to the table. As others were doing , I introduced myself and told them that while he was at Clemson I delivered him his party pizza and a small cheese piza every couple of weeks. Without even glancing up he picked up a ball and started to sign it. I asked him if he would mind signing it with #66 . Again without even looking up he just said ,"no I am signing with my chicago number' I left the ball on the table , and left.

Dude NEVER tipped me, never acknowledged me, and was just a "miserable" acting person. When I think of the "Fridge" these days, I see rude, no tipping, has been that did not set an example of what is expected from a Clemson man.

Mine was with Dwight Clark

Sep 18, 2019, 9:48 AM

You probably don’t want to hear any similarities with yours truly, but I was there in ‘80 (class of ‘81) and I worked at Pizza Hut (but we didn’t deliver ??).

My passion was basketball, and I spent a lot of time at Fike playing pickup games. Steve Fuller and Dwight Clark played on the same frat team (SAE I think) and played quite a bit, as well. Although a few inches shorter, I would typically be the one to cover Dwight. He was pretty arrogant and totally blew off any friendly small talk, (‘nice move/shot’), gestures, etc., and I always had the feeling “I was a nobody of no importance’ to him. Perhaps dating Shawn Weatherly will do that to a guy’s ego?

Still feel bad about his death - and the Fridge’s current physical condition - but it’s a shame they are/weren’t a bit more ‘sociable’.

Well, guess I do need to clean up my act on tnet, as well, eh?

I was once by myself on an elevator in an Atlanta hotel when in stepped The American Dream, Dusty Rhodes. Dusty appeared to be hungover and in a very foul mood. I determined it was in my best interest to avoid eye contact and say nothing at all. I remain convinced it was one of my better decisions.

Regarding Jim Phillips.... I am 34 and wish that I had been able to meet Jim before his death. His broadcasts brought Clemson athletics to life for me. The fondest memory of my childhood is listening to his coverage of football games with my dad in the 90's and early 2000's while sitting in our basement playing pool. RIP Jim. You are missed

Re: I heard this from the late, great Jim Phillips

Thanks tigerpeets for posting Jim's obit - and your comments.

I still pass by Abiding Peace Lutheran Church on Batesville Rd in Simpsonville about once or twice a month. Always think of Jim. That was where his official funeral service was held. A really small place for the large number who attended. I was there and it was totally overflowing. They probably should have had it at the (then) "Bi-Lo Center."

I can tell you a few things about Jim. One - it took an army to keep him from broadcasting a game. Most people are unaware of the terrible ongoing "back troubles" Jim had, and how much pain he was in very often. I'd see him grimacing at times walking down hallways or through airports - but when it was broadcast time - he could block it all out. At least he appeared to.

Another thing was his level of professionalism. The guy was always PREPARED - that's why he was so good. His work ethic was beyond reproach. He had a "game face" too. When it was airtime, he was laser-focused. Another good rule to follow: You didn't mess with Phillips during a broadcast! No distractions unless it's urgent. When he was off the air, he was relaxed and funny (usually).

Another trait I liked about Jim - he was a "look you in the eye" guy. When he listened to you or talked to you - direct eye contact. There was no fake BS about Jim. He told you what he thought, straight out - good or bad. How many "real people" like that do you meet? Personally, I like folks who are "what you see is who they really are."

Jim had a great smile and a great laugh. If you cracked him up - he would turn "red-faced" laughing. He also liked to pick on people in a fun way and could take a good jab too. If you thought you had a good one on Jim, he usually had a better, funnier comeback line. Excellent at verbal jousting.

No doubt he's still missed by many.

Meeting KISS in an elevator...

Sep 18, 2019, 10:14 AM

Many moons ago when KISS was at the pinnacle of their career, my family and I were staying at a hotel in NC. I don't remember the exact year but my younger brother was in elementary school. He did not follow rock music at all and had no idea who KISS was.

SOMEHOW, he ended up on an elevator on the penthouse floor..to this day I have no clue how that happened. Evidently KISS has just performed and had been whisked back to their penthouse, still in their stage garb. My brother was on the elevator (trying to find his way back down to our floor) when the elevator doors opened up and KISS was standing there with their entourage. My brother thought he had found the elevator to he!! and started running around screaming to the top of his lungs. Someone from the hotel ended up escorting him back to our room and told us what had happened.

He was literally horrified. I'm 2 years older than he is and I was just not able to show any mercy. I don't remember how long I laughed but to this day I wish I could have seen his face when those elevator doors opened up.

By the way, this is the same brother that ran screaming "Monsters, Monsters!!" through a department store in Brevard NC when we were kids....he had gotten away from my Dad while shopping and ended up on an aisle where 2 Nuns came walking toward him in their habits...not sure which incident scarred him the most.

Very funny! I can picture it...

I met Herschell Walker once; on a flight from Dallas to Richmond, VA. As I passed him while getting to my seat, I said "sure wish you went to Clemson". I went up to him at the baggage claim and shook his hand. He is very nice guy and let me take a picture with him.

Go Tigers!!!

Movino - great story about your younger brother - KISS, the nuns - and which one he was more afraid of. Probably some folks who attended Catholic school who were equally terrified of some nuns!

As a kid, I was never afraid of masks or people in costumes, but I've seen a good number who became hysterical around such. Never understood the ones who would cry and scream going to see Santa at the mall. "Look kid, this is the guy who's gonna bring you a lot of really cool stuff! Why are you crying?"

But - true story - Santa broke my nose when I was about 3 or 4. We went to a Christmas parade, and finally Santa comes along at the end throwing out candy (now - they don't let him do that).

I was being held by my dad, waving & shouting to Santa, & he was throwing some "big stuff" to the kiddies. Great big candy bars & the like. Well, Santa wound up & threw a huge "Pay Day" or "Milky Way" bar & it clunked me right on the face. Blood everywhere & it DID break my nose. Stung like crazy & felt like a right cross from Iron Mike.

But, a couple of weeks later, all was forgiven when Mr. Claus brought me all that "cool stuff."
