Something You Probably Did Not Want to Know

Sometimes we get information we didn't ask for and wish no one would have told us. But, it's a shame to let info such as this remain hidden in a book, attic, barn or even in the outhouse.
Over the years I accumulated a lot of engineering books, books of tables, conversion factors, etc. Looking through one of them today I found the following and knew someone was probably seated on the edge of a chair awaiting this bit of facts. Some of you love your beer but are you up to snuff on ale and beer measurements and able to share this knowledge with other beer drinkers? Here we go.
9 Gallons = 1 Firkin 2 Firkins = 1 Kilderkin 2 Kilderkins = 1 Barrel 1-1/2 Barrels = 1 Hogshead 1-1/2 Hogsheads = 1 Puncheon 1-1/2 Puncheons = 1 Butt or Pipe
Now, go out there and talk firkins and puncheons with your buddies.

Just be aware that it's in Imperial gallons, not US gallons.

It'll really screw up your measurements for the party if you don't know the difference.

I Think Joe needs to hold a life information seminar at the Esso Club for all of us...It could last two or three days, but the value would be priceless...Thanks Joe...we all appreciate your posts!!

Don't get me wrong, I could appreciate any good Hogshead. But wouldn't one just get to 2 barrels? And where does Keg fit in??

what's the underside bottom of a wine bottle called, the part that dips way up and costs volume to the bottle (unbeknownst to most)? And why is it there?

Goes back to the days of when wine bottles were still made by glassblowers. Debatable whether it still serves a purpose.

Interesting stuff. I had to look up where these words came from..
Firkin – 9 gallons Kilderkin – 18 gallons Barrel – 36 gallons Hogshead – 54 gallons Butt – 108 gallons Tun – 216 gallons
Firkin – It’s an old English term derived from a Middle Dutch word vierdekijn, which means fourth. It’s appropriate because a firkin is a fourth of a barrel in volume.
Kilderkin – Again an old English term derived from Dutch but it doesn’t mean half, it just means small cask, but it is a half barrel.
Hogshead – I wasn’t able to find the origin of the term but it was standardized as 54 gallons by an act of Parliament in 1423.
Butt – This size in wine is called a pipe, so when The Balvenie Portwood Finish 21 states it was finished in Port pipes, it means barrels of this size.
Tun – It sounds like ton because it shares the same origin though the latter refers only to mass/weight.
