Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish.

Mar 26, 2013, 2:32 PM

They named their school after a fictional FRENCH cathedral from a Victor Hugo Novel, but they identify mostly as Irish. Also, their School colors are blue and gold, but their mascot wears all green.

Honestly, these guy are worse than Auburn and Ole Miss trying to please everyone with their mismatched mascots and watered down school traditions.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Dang it. I've been to Paris and I missed seeing that. Awesome. Now I gotta go back. Paris has the most beautiful architecture in the universe IMO. You can walk for hours on end and be amazed on every street.

The cathedral of Notre Dame is much more than a Victor Hugo creation
It is one of the greatest examples of gothic architecture in the world. As I recall construction began around 1100 so it's been a reality for quite a while!

Speaking of watered down

Dec 11, 2018, 11:24 AM

Does that fighting Irish mascot drink his whiskey on the rocks or just straight from the bottle to get completely hammered?

Re: Speaking of watered down

Dec 11, 2018, 5:59 PM

Irish drink whisky (not whiskey that’s the American way) neat while singing 13th century Gaelic songs. At least that’s how they’re always portrayed in movies

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Speaking of watered down

Dec 11, 2018, 10:27 PM

Irish whiskey is spelled the same as bourbon whiskey. You're thinking of Scotch whisky.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish.

Dec 11, 2018, 11:29 AM

First off Notre Dame is a real cathedral. The novel is fiction. But at least you got the author right.
Secondly, they do wear Green on some occasions.
And thirdly, their traditions are no more watered down than some others I have seen.
Something I don't understand however is people who think they understand something when they know nothing about the subject they think they understand.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish.

Dec 11, 2018, 11:34 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So the French also named a church after a fictional character

Dec 11, 2018, 11:47 AM [ in reply to Re: Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish. ]

Re: Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish.

The dichotomy is funny now that you point it out. Never thought about it before. However, there is an easy explanation. As Ireland is, or was, devout Catholics, they share the tradition of honoring Jesus Christ by honoring his mother. Notre Dame means Our Lady and her colors are considered blue and gold.

Re: Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish.

Dec 11, 2018, 10:25 PM

All the paintings I've seen of Our Lady show her with a light blue cape or shawl. It's more of a tarhole blue than the deep blue I've seen the domers wear.

Re: So he was not really a “Modo”?

Dec 11, 2018, 8:00 PM

It was something other teams called us to mock us in the early 1900s. Our original mascots included "Ramblers", but we rolled with the Fighting Irish that people called us. Similar to why we are not in a conference. The Big Ten, particularly Michigan/AD Fielding Yost, kept us from joining. We started scheduling nationally since Michigan State and Purdue were the only B10 teams that would play us. Hence the USC rivalry and national brand.

Dec 11, 2018, 8:16 PM

It was real when Hugo wrote about it but was later destroyed in the French Revolution by the Irish. It's gold domes fell on top of the French aristocracy (blue bloods) hiding within, hence the colors.

Re: Something I have never understood about the Fighting Irish.

Dec 11, 2018, 11:11 PM

I don't all the history behind the various N.Dame/Fighting Irish traditions, but I do know the worst acting job ever was by Pat O'Brien as Knute Rockne in the 1940 film - "Knute Rockne, All American." Hollywood makeup was still not too sophisticated, & O'Brien's fake "Rockne nose" looked like an unbaked biscuit stuck on his face; plus, his acting was WORSE. Could be the only time Ronald Reagan's acting (playing George Gipp) was better than any other cast member.
