While watching only 1 major but puny source of water being poured onto ND Cathedral in Paris..

Apr 15, 2019, 2:47 PM

Wondering if our technique of flying a helecopter over forest fires with a huge container of water or chemicals dropped directly on the fire..

would have worked with Notre Dame Cathedral fire?

probably not safe to use those chemicals in a populated area

Apr 15, 2019, 2:53 PM

You would think there would be more than 1 stream of water though

Did you see Trump's tweet?

"So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris . Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly."

Unfortunately, I don't think flying water tankers or

helicopters with water dropping capacity are stationed near Paris. By the time they can get there probably too late.

There is a possibility of water damage too***

Saying it cause further damage***

problems. I'm sure a landmark of that historical magnitude would have had a game plan for fire department actions. Maybe they could have done better but it seems there is an underlying structural concern would limit what they can do. Especially compounded with a bunch of folks there renovating it who have to be rescued and accounted for..

Water proofing method makes water from above irrelevant

Apr 15, 2019, 5:45 PM

The roof and spire of Notre Dame were all but doomed to burn once flames began to spread, possibly begun by a renovation accident, because of a Gothic engineering technique used to waterproof the top of the cathedral by placing a lead sheet roof over a wooden truss structure on top of the groin vault that served as the ceiling of the cathedral’s nave, according to Ted Henderson, who studied archaeology at Dartmouth College.

The wooden truss became highly flammable as it dried over hundreds of years, but was sealed from the outside by the lead sheets, and therefore impervious to firefighters’ efforts to douse the flames with water.

“So the wood catches on fire, and it’s not actually exposed to the outside of the building anywhere,” Henderson told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “In fact, the reason the roof is covered with lead is so water can’t get inside. It’s specifically fireproofed. So when the firemen, you know, arrive on the scene and they’re spraying cathedral with water, it’s running off the sides of the lead roof and can’t access this void where the fire is actually spreading.”

It may have been that way at the start, but that fire looks

plenty hot enough to melt lead.

Dropping water on that structure would have caused it to collapse.

The tanker drops do not put the wildfire out.

They just cool it off and slow it down so firefighters can get in and do the work. A good pump delivers more water than drops. Turn around times are long for the big tankers.

Nothing dropped does any good until roof collapses. At that point, what does it matter?

Unbelievable they didn’t have more preventative

The Notre Dame Cathedral is made of limestone. When limestone is heated and rapidly cooled, it cracks. That’s a great way to ensure the whole thing comes down (despite the flying buttresses keeping it upright)

Are we arrogant enough to fight fires from across an ocean?

Apr 16, 2019, 11:53 AM

It’s the most visited landmark in all of Paris. I’m sure they did all they could. Only a narcissistic idiot and his followers would be arrogant enough to make arm chair suggestions from the other side of the Atlantic.
