Savor the moment, remember the years

Dec 4, 2016, 8:35 PM

The confetti flies the second straight year for Clemson. It wasn't always so.

On one side, a respected coach leads his nationally ranked team loaded with top recruits to a game they plan to make an annual event ... their conference championship. On the other, a team searching for a future and taking any bowl against any team fears its good old days are little more than a dimming memory.

The two teams, as you might have guessed: Clemson and South Carolina. The timing you might not remember ... just 6 years ago.

As we proudly and rightfully savor and celebrate the Sons of Clemson's second straight trip to the national playoffs, a few are tempted to snicker as the Capons limp into a third-tier bowl against .... drum roll ... South Florida. Sort of warms your chicken-hating heart, doesn't it?

But six years ago, when Deshaun and Artavis and Jordan and Ben and all the young men we now cheer were still in high school, the Capons held the cards. And the Tigers were ... well, the Tigers were losing to South Florida. And looking pretty dang bad doing it.

The Capons, meanwhile, had beaten Clemson in Death Valley. It was their first back-to-back wins in the series since 1970 and their biggest win in the series in 35 years. They had beaten Georgia. They had beaten No. 1 Alabama, for cryin' out loud! This was their world and the Tigers were just watching from the sideline.

So, how did we get here?
Clearly, Karma has a heckuva sense of humor. The Capons, once the masters with nothing but daylight ahead, have been returned to their coop. The Tigers embraced the suck, building one of the most successful programs in the country. And Clemson is built to succeed into the future.

So, when you see our cluckish cousins and how far they have fallen, suppress the urge to cackle. They live where we were, on a dark side street that we will not return to. Instead, look at where we have come from and savor where we are ... a heck of a long way from 6 years ago. And smile where we are going.

This is going to be a heck of a ride. Embrace every minute along the way.

They are three years from improvement

or another coaching change. Kicking the success can down the road another 3 years.

I do not see the SEC East having a dominate team for at least that long. It will manifest itself in a coaching change from someone. Whom will it be?

It will be a school that will step up and make the commitment. It is likely in the ADs hands. And that is most likely Foley's successor at FL. Second in line is the new AD at UT. All the others (Mizzou committs to nothing, Mandybilt will never commit to sports, cOOtmama not with the Pillsbury Doughboy as AD, Cantphucky is Roundball centric, UGA will stick with Smart for years until its obvious...)

forget it..

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.
