Remember when players used to fail to qualify? Hardly ever

Jul 17, 2018, 10:50 AM

do I see that now. I assume it's a privacy issue or maybe they are allowed in on the basis of learning disabilities (Lou Holtz played that card several times quite successfully years ago and I'm not knocking him for it, just wondering if that is the difference) or if those players who are borderline are just not recruited and end up at Division 1AA or Division 2 schools or junior colleges?

It just seems there would be several more non-qualifiers in each class but it's rarely heard of since the 2002 or so and beyond. Poor Tommy West used to get his share it seemed.

The NCAA Clearing House remedied a lot of that...

along with an ability to transfer information electronically.

Now coaches have a pretty clear idea fairly early on of a prospects qualifications long before they invest a lot of time and effort into someone who turns-out to be an academic casualty.

Cusschamp will offer pretty much anything under 80 that hasn't been dead more than four days.

A lot of this is because of our new recruiting perspective

Jul 17, 2018, 1:16 PM

Yes they at-risk qualifiers are identified a lot earlier it seems, however I think from our perspective we no longer even consider them because we no longer have to.

Some of the schools that don't recruit as well will still take the risk with questionable qualifiers.

The reason we have Travis Etienne is because Cordarrian Richardson wasn't going to qualify. Albeit was because his school was changing grades but still

Coaches put high priority on quality students, citizens and athletes. Used to be “who can we get?” Now it is “who meets our standards?” Coach Swinney and his staff do exceptional job. Grateful for them all!
