soccerkrzy: HTPC/ XBMC-Type Question
Feb 28, 2014, 9:10 AM
|
|
Have you ever looked at the HTTP protocol for sending commands to XBMC?
I'm trying to decide between wall mounting an iPad & using the web interface or using a bunch of RFID proximity cards printed up as movie posters and connected to a reader and a raspberry pi.
Thoughts?

few things...organizes/plays local media on your network

devices via your 'server' (which in most cases, is your computer) https://plex.tv/
you can play it via your computer, or any other computer on your home network, and roku you're signed into, chromecast* ipad/iphone/androis anything, at work via the web app (http://plex.tv/web/app)
you can share your stuff w/ other people and vice versa....all remotely.
it organizes tv shows/movies/music, and supplies metadata & posters, subtitles (if you set it up right), etc...
and it's mostly all free. There IS an optional subscription for some added (unecessary for the 'common' lay-user) features,
* one of those subscription perks is getting first crack at new features...for instance, chromecast compatibility. For now, you've gotta be a subscriber (anywhere from $3/mo to $80 lifetime) to use Chromecast, but eventually it'll be free...

Is it easily removeable from that mount or is that permanent

I think I'd rather have it sitting on something like an ottoman instead of having to get up and control things, ya know?

It's removable, but I also have the logitech harmony remote

that lets me control the HTPC very well.
Mostly, this is to start the movie when you walk in, and set the lights so you have time to get situated.

I just don't understand why you would want to be standing when doing this. Buy a Harmony remote and a cheap IR receiver and do everything from your couch.

Already have the Harmony. Couple Use Cases:
Feb 28, 2014, 9:35 AM

|
1) I'll be watching TV or playing Xbox, and the wife comes down the stairs, asking "What's on the HTPC?" This leads to me having to stop what I'm doing, and scan through it with her. This lets her come down, browse, and start the movie while I pause/quit the game. 2)I can also use it with additional information services. 3)I can add in light dimming and trailers, and give it more of a movie theater experience.
