landscapeNET

Apr 4, 2017, 7:55 AM
Untitled7.png(7.4 K)

so I built a 3' tall cedar fence to portion off part of my back yard for a paver patio and nice grass area since my beagles tend to tear up our entire yard. mrs. cid wants the fence to be a little taller so I came up with the idea to build a planter box on top of the fence. I have an issue though...

The cedar I purchased is no longer in stock at Home depot. It was 1/2" planks. Now all they have is 1" planks that are $30/board so that's not going to work.

I have come up with:

- Using PT pine fence pickets (cheapest wood option) https://www.lowes.com/pd/Severe-Weather-Common-5-8-in-x-5-1-2-in-x-6-ft-Actual-0-625-in-x-5-5-in-x-6-ft-Fence-Picket-Pressure-Treated-Pine-Picket/50342080

-using appearance grade PT pine https://www.lowes.com/pd/Top-Choice-Common-1-in-x-6-in-x-8-ft-Actual-0-75-in-x-5-5-in-x-8-ft-Pressure-Treated-Southern-Yellow-Pine-Board/4758192

-use a corrugated metal roof and bend to shape needed (cheapest overall option) https://www.lowes.com/pd/Union-Corrugating-2-33-ft-x-8-ft-Corrugated-Steel-Roof-Panel/3317582

-use composite decking https://www.lowes.com/pd/ChoiceDek-Foundations-Actual-0-67-in-x-11-25-in-x-8-ft-Foundations-Beach-House-Gray-Composite-Deck-Board/3612034

Mrs cid doesn't really like any of the options. Is there anything i'm not considering that may work? I personally prefer the fence pickets or the metal since it is the cheapest options and I don't really care what it looks like but gotta get it by the wife first. any suggestions would be appreciated. This is 40' of fence so i'm trying not to break the bank. It doesn't have to be planters just anything that can make the fence taller without extending the posts. Lattice is NOT an option

It is a 3' fence within our yard that I have already built a 6' privacy fence around. We want to have a garden and nice grass area to go out into so we are making a pig pin for humans since our beagles run our life

We tried getting rid of ours.

Fecker keeps digging holes in the yard. The lady who adopts old hounds can't take her right now. By far one of the most stubborn dogs I've ever had.

Yep. He made it to 13 or so, which I hear is good...

They have a tiger costume that is worn strictly on gamedays.

Purchase a refrigerator posthaste and have Lowes deliver/install. It'll be the best experience of your life. And thus, you'll no longer need the fence because everlasting euphoria.

You haven't met Shorty, have you?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For about $250-$300 you can

Apr 4, 2017, 8:02 AM

rent a bobcat and remove the ground around the fence. This way you will not have to touch the fence and it will be taller wrt the ground.

^^^^ this kind of out of the box thinking is what

coils of razor wire like prisons use. A side benefit is that it will let the cool evening breezes blow through. Probably need some pretty good gloves when you install.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Less than $1/ft for single coil....may want to do triple

Apr 4, 2017, 8:10 AM

strand though....This is what we use in Africa

Apr 4, 2017, 8:14 AM

this would have been good a few months ago when I found out my beagle was climbing over my 6' privacy fence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How long before...

Apr 4, 2017, 8:27 AM

they are fat and old and have a bad hip? Maybe you can wait them out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

technically, i think this is considered hardscape

Apr 4, 2017, 9:00 AM

Maybe that will help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Part of the issue

Apr 4, 2017, 9:05 AM

but I always thought of hardscaping as stonework

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Plants become part of the land. Stone and fences are hard.

Apr 4, 2017, 9:27 AM

Landscaping...hardscaping...it's science.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

but given enough time, those become part of the land too

Apr 4, 2017, 9:32 AM

I think you are being a little too time-ist.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pour concrete over the entire back yard, spray paint it

Apr 4, 2017, 9:24 AM

green.

Problem solved.

Builders FirstSource may have what you're needing. They have free delivery, but you could go and pick up you're order if you prefer.

Or you could go with Mackey's "Harbin Lumber, remember the number".

Apr 4, 2017, 9:35 AM

I'll probably check with the local BFS. Most places around here don't really stock cedar since pine is our natural tree.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

do something like this

Apr 4, 2017, 9:34 AM

wood frame panels with wire mesh. Cheap and easy to build. Build the panels, put in the posts and screw them in. Put whatever you want on top (planter, etc). Simple to replace a panel if it ever gets damaged. I've got some like this and have some awesome honeysuckle vines growing on them now.

pro tip for lowcountry peeps

Apr 4, 2017, 9:38 AM

I have that same fence, do like. HOWEVER--don't get the galvanized wire panels--get the PVC coated black wire panels.

Galvanized looks like carp in about 3 months. I may replace mine because of this.
