I never really pondered there being a "fire ant season".

Nov 9, 2018, 10:54 AM

The sudden appearance of eleventy billion fire ant mounds within a mile of my house this week has changed that. Do people not Amdro?

dammyt. Thanks for reminding me.

Nov 9, 2018, 10:56 AM

Have about 4 piles to Amdro.

I have one massive mound that I've allowed to thrive over

Nov 9, 2018, 10:57 AM

in my side yard. I think it's been there a couple of years at this point, and any time I find a dead small animal in the yard I offer it to the 'Hill' as a peace offering.

One time, I had too many beers while doing yard work. I had just mowed over quite a large mound, and the things were everywhere. Honestly the sheer number of ants was impressive. I decided it would be a good idea to try to dig up the entire community, and got dirt/ants all over myself. I've never done that again.

My great uncle would pour kerosene on ant piles

Nov 9, 2018, 11:05 AM

Then light it.

Also, same great uncle, used to wrap a kerosene-soaked rag around an axe handle, light it, and hold it up to get rid of wasp nests.

SAME great uncle who, to this day, remains the only person to ever occupy a vehicle with me when all four tires left the ground. He was driving and it was his 1960 Ford pickup truck, and his pasture.

You use this stuff to treat each mound or can you just

Nov 9, 2018, 11:04 AM

put it in a spreader and ride? I think I need something for a spreader. Would make it much easier than treating 147 individual mounds.

or something of that size:

Cut holes in the lid, and fill as needed with economy bag of Amdro or similar.

Handy little portable ant hill treater.

I did, but was offering something

Nov 9, 2018, 11:21 AM

easier than walking around with a bag slinging the stuff out of a cup, or your free hand.

This may actually help:

lawn mower. When I pull up 'longside one, I dust it and keep going.

I have thought about putting it on a stick so I don't have to get off of the mower to apply it.

Maybe I could put a nail on the other end of the stick and use it to stab trash in the yard.

I went around with one of these and had fun burning them

the other day.

My son and I pretended like we were dragons.

I'd kick the ant pile and when they'd come out, we'd fry them.

Very satisfying!

Once you get it down to a manageable level use this

Doesn’t kill the lightening bugs and works in 24 hours.

Going by the name, I’m guessing Bengaline makes it in his basement.

Re: Grandpa's old trick.....

Nov 9, 2018, 11:17 AM

Used to live on a farm with about 500-800 head of cattle at a given time.

I recall, as a child, my grandfather taking a shovel scoop from one pile to another. Then mixing multiple if close together. Apparently, they're so territorial, they'll fight each other to death.

Later my dad told me about a calf that died from being bitten after standing in a pile. So, he started doing this scooping. Usually with me and my brother. Easy work, and spending G-Pa time. I've never tried it, but you can't beat wisdom.

I've always kind of wanted an ant farm for this reason

Nov 9, 2018, 11:20 AM

I've experimented doing similar things with beta fish, dwarf gourami, and several other more aggressive species of fish...but never ants. Could be pretty interesting.

Re: I've always kind of wanted an ant farm for this reason

I had a pickle jar on my desk at work years ago with a praying mantis in it. Folks would bring crickets and other bugs and put them in there. We'd sit around and watch the brawl. The mantis killed everything except for a huge beetle. They just had a stalemate. Eventually the mantis layed eggs and died.

Really taught me a lot about life.

That's why I enjoy aquariums

Nov 9, 2018, 12:10 PM

I've got a huge angel fish that has killed all of his tank mates so far. He's been through another angel fish, and a blood parrot. Blood parrot lasted almost a year, but just all of the sudden got gotten one day. Probably going to try a tiger oscar next to see if he can be bested.

report results if you try.

My yard issue is moles/voles. Occasional armadillo. Tear a yard UP! Haven't found a sure way of killing them yet. Dog sniffs at them, but doesn't catch them. I've taught her not to dig the yard up, so likely the reason. I'd sure like a lesson on ridding those bastages

Back before fire ants invaded

Nov 9, 2018, 11:23 AM [ in reply to Re: Grandpa's old trick..... ]

We used to catch the big red ants and the big black ants, put them in a jar and watch them battle it out.

The victors got fried with a magnifying glass.

Much more entertaining than a video game.

Fun times & introduced me to gambling.

They are Fire Ants, not Fire Fish

Nov 9, 2018, 11:57 AM

When it rains they have to get out of the water under ground so they build up. They are always there, you can only seem them when it rains.

Best way to get rid of all of them is to spread this stuff all over your yard (and your neighbors yard if close) using a fertilizer spreader.
