a front porch light that I can turn on after I get my car parked. People laugh at me because my house is always so dark when we arrive at night. I don't want the porch light to burn for 10 hours while I'm gone.

sounds like an untenable situation....

I just installed one of these for our front porch lights:

By pressing on the "door", you operate as a normal switch. I also installed one of these in the room where our dogs stay when we're out of town so lights don't have to be on all of the time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is getting really close to something that could work.

Dec 6, 2013, 11:57 AM

It just installs to the light switch?

Re: That is getting really close to something that could work.

Dec 6, 2013, 12:38 PM

Yep. Depending on your current switches, you may need a different switch plate. One caveat is they say it only works on lights that wired to a single switch. The wiring was relatively simple:

Red wire on switch with black wire to light
Black wire on switch with black wire to main
White wire on switch with white wire to main
Green wire on switch with ground wire

Just make sure to slide the On/Off switch to On after you're done wiring and whatnot.

outside light, but there are 3 switches in spot on the wall. I don't know if that matters. My dad is a journeymen electrician, you'd think he would have taught me some of this useful stuff instead of sending me to college.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're good. BTW shut off power first at the breaker.

Dec 6, 2013, 1:31 PM

Might sound obvious but I have heard of people switching off the wall plate and then assuming power was off at the fixture - this might not be the case.

income if you chose not to pay a bill for a few months. Then when they cut the power off, you just back pay to have it cut back on.
