Targeting

Nov 5, 2018, 7:44 AM

I know they can’t really add something to the rule about judging if there is malice because then it gets really muddy. But they should add an additional punishment if after the hit the players get up and start celebrating. I mean that just makes it obvious that the hit was meant to be violent and then they celebrate on top of it. FSU comes to mind but then the hit on Will after a fair catch, that was just ugly, trashy, and uncalled for. I’m glad we don’t have coaches that encourage that kind of behavior. If I’m a ref I’m calling unsportsmanlike after the play on that every time.

Re: Targeting

I saw the two targeting penalties live at our game against Louisville this weekend and the overturned targeting penalty against the LSU DB in the first half of the bammer game via TV. In my opinion, neither of the penalties during the Clemson / Louisville game should have been confirmed as targeting. The Clemson DB attempted to turn to the side and lead with the shoulder, but the Louisville player lowered his head in a way that caused contact after the CU player's shoulder made the initial contact. The penalty against Louisville was not that violent and probably was a "make-up" call for the Clemson targeting penalty.

However, the overturned targeting penalty against the LSU db was worse than either of the penalties in the Clemson game. In my opinion, it should have stood. Maybe there is a different standard in other conferences, but this targeting rule is too subjective to be workable. The rule needs to either be dropped or made very standardized - for the good of the game.
