My thoughts exactly. Maybe new word since the situation has changed allowing for easier transfers. Have to imagine the NCAA had to set up a structure to make it legit and create avenue for players and coaches to connect.

The name sort of gives off a "Star Trek" vibe, but come on, "web portal" has been used for many years to describe a specially designed website that brings information from diverse sources together in a uniform way.

It is a new concept brought on by the new transfer rules.

Under the old rules, opposing teams could not contact a player who was interested in making a transfer until that player left his current program.

Now, if a player enters the transfer portal he can essentially be recruited again by any program who has interest. The player can then decide where to go or to stay with his current program.

It's basically like being caught cheating on a spouse. You are most likely gone but technically there is a chance you can change your mind and try to mend the burned bridges.
