Was it a drop kick, by any chance? Those are still legal.

They have an Australian football player on their team that does those. Did it against the Bears earlier this year.

Pretty sure you can kick any style you want on kickoffs. Most elect to kick from tee, because it’s easier to kick farther from tee than punt
