Programs that got close but could never win it all

Dec 22, 2017, 12:01 AM

Oregon is the first that came to mind. Great 4-5 year run but no title to show.

Virginia Tech is another.

A step below would include Wisconsin, Stanford, Oklahoma State.

Next tier includes Texas A&M & maybe Louisville

Even lower tier would be Kansas St, Mizzou, & Tx Tech***

OP said close. Don't think getting smacked by Scam Newton

Dec 22, 2017, 10:29 AM

and Awbarn 56-17 in the SEC Championship game counts as close. The one and only time they really did get close was in their Crack Magic year of 1984, when they lost to NAVY to burst the bubble. Just did a quick search, and a 2013 USA Today poll voted this the Greatest Disaster in (University of) South Carolina sports history. They instead went on to lose their Gator Bowl game against Okie St, which would have been the start of the SEC "they didn't want to be there" excuse, except that they were not in the SEC yet at the time. :)

W. Va, still remember Rich Rod crying on the sidelines

Dec 22, 2017, 7:33 AM

after losing to Pitt, when W. Va. would have gotten to the BCS Championship game with a win. Then, he was gone to Michigan, and it was all downhill from there.
