The 2008 325i that we ran over a driveshaft with a few weeks ago finally got the estimate from the insurance company. Car was well-taken care of and in pretty pristine shape, so we'll put KBB at somewhere around $8-9K. Estimate to repair: $32,000.

Did you tell them the value of the car?

No, since it's not my car.

Oct 31, 2017, 1:45 PM

But they'll be totaling it, obviously.

Oct 31, 2017, 1:50 PM

They gave him a Hyundai for a rental, and it took them a week and a half to do it. But at least it's not his insurance paying for it.

That was the question I had, who's paying for it? Now I know

Pro tip....get him to ask for a quote to buy it back.

Oct 31, 2017, 2:33 PM

I totaled my 87 535is this past spring.

Had agreed value policy, so they paid me that amount and totaled it.

"How much to buy it back from you?" I asked. "Hmmmm, one sec....looks like $167."

Bought it back, sold it to another collector guy here in town for $1500.

Doesn't tell buddy driver
Buddy driver rides over and totals his car

empathy for others.

One word. Totaled.

Oct 31, 2017, 3:12 PM

When you hit 65-75% actual cash value, the insurance company will total it. Diffrent insurance companies have different thresholds, but most total a car around 70% ACV.

Little known fact.....A relatively minor wreck can total a modern car equipped with dash and side curtain airbags. Replacing those can run almost 8K or more. My gawd aweful (but still awesome) minivan I bought yesterday has about 67 air bags everywhere. If, at 150K miles there was $10K in damage PLUS all the airbags blew, it would be totaled. Probably fixable with the damage at 10K though and no air bags.

Re: One word. Totaled.

The % can be less (and mandated by the state).

When I did auto claims 10 years ago in SC, it was once the repair total hit 50% value of the car, it was deemed a total loss.
