Just a thought about ACC marketing

Oct 20, 2019, 7:07 PM

Watch any sec game and there is a barrage of commercials talking up the conference and all the schools in it. Why doesn’t the acc do something, anything to bolster the rep of the acc.. They have the frickin National champion in their conference, you would thin it would pay dividends for them to talk that up.

Because it’s Clemson.
Lord knows, if it were a Tobacco Road school the shilling out of Greensboro would be endless and nauseating.

Do you seriously think the ACC execs have made a conscious

Oct 20, 2019, 7:50 PM

decision to promote ACC football less since Clemson is the dominant conference team?

Swofford: "Okay guys, how do we want to promote ACC football?"
Media Expert #1: "Well, one of our conference members has won 2 of the last 3 national championships. Maybe we should promote them."
Swofford: "I'm not sure, what about the North Carolina schools?"
Media Expert #2: "We can probably promote all of the schools in our advertising, just show Clemson a little more since they are on top right now."
Swofford: "That is a nice idea guys, but as you know, I've held a grudge against Clemson for 30 years and I can't change now."
Media Expert #1: "You aren't willing to give Clemson a little extra air time, since their success improve the conference's success?"
Swofford: "Well, what do they think?" *looks around the table*
Roy Williams: "Yeah, we can't promote football or we'll risk tarnishing our conference's basketball image."
Mike Krzyzewski: "What is football?"
Ghost of Dean Smith: "Yeah, no football promoting. The ACC is too good in basketball, and promoting football sends the wrong message. I still haven't forgiven Rick Barnes for challenging me."
Swofford: "So the majority here feel that we can't promote the ACC in football, and certainly not Clemson, because we have to continue our hatred for Clemson, its alumni, and its fans, and do everything in our power to screw them. Agreed?"
All in unison: "Agreed."

Wow.

Just look at this fantasy tale. 1981 Clemson wins the National Championship. But due to recruiting (that did what everyone else was doing), the ACC recommends Clemson get two years probation.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1982/11/09/clemson-gets-two-years-in-acc-sanctions/f9aa5663-3b4b-42fd-a00e-d470cfaa55a5/

The NCAA agrees and gives Clemson two years probation.

https://www.nytimes.com/1982/11/23/sports/severe-sanctions-levied-on-clemson.html

So, the ACC then decides to tack on an additional third year.

Yep. I think the conference would go to bat for us and promote Clemson every chance they could get. UNC’s John Swofford is just that kind of guy.

Oh yeah, in 1982 UNC wins the National Championship in MBB with Dean Smith. So maybe their focus was on promoting basketball more than football then. TOTALLY different than how the ACC “execs” are now.

Wondered the same thing!

In fact, I wish there was a loud mouth talking head that was pro-ACC that basically talked a bit of smack! (Not over the top) but somebody who said what many others think; but are not compelled to say it. Maybe one day!

The ACCN should have that guy, but they can’t even do that

Oct 20, 2019, 7:36 PM

Right. Their network launch is an epic fail, which still does not have an agreement with the largest cable provider in their territory.

All of this contributes to why we in the acc have no pride and get no respect.

I think it's been great......

they pimp Clemson almost 24/7, way more than I ever thought they would.

I know that in a year or two, they will generate many more interesting shows and better staff members. SEC Network has a 5 year head start on them, give ACC a little time to get established. They'll find their footing.

Sorry you need more instantly on Day 1.

But why am I surprised there would be complaints. That's how the world operates now.

They'd have to get a group or a fan base to chant "ACC...ACC...ACC" and I'd be ###### if I'd participate in that.

The reason the SEC runs those ads on their network

Oct 20, 2019, 8:44 PM

Is they couldn’t sell that ad time to a paying customer.
