I am not sure but I think the 'tater' label came to prominence late in the rivalry, perhaps in the 80s.

Of course, I'm not sure that 'Coot' is any older.

Seems like Gamecocks and Tigers were ok in the way back, you know when you talked nicely, more or less about your sporting opponents.

They have been very discourteous Bill ... you want to work up a letter of protest and I will sign it and we can present it to their new President , Colonel Coot ?

Or we could just let this season unfold . They'll not be in favor of talking about it come this time next year .

It's just short for "dictator", LB.

Of course, Clemson is an Agricultural and Mechanical College, kinda' like our friends in Texas, but why did they select "taters" as a sobriquet, instead of "engineers"? Oh, I think I get it... and coots are useless waterfowl, no alternative, and what are they anyway - a GED school for late hatchlings?

Go Tigers!!!

Since the Coots heard that Clemson is northwest of them they think that we're in Idaho. They suck at geography as much as they do at football.

Where does the term Coot come from?

A coot is a trash bird, not worth shooting or eating.

Maybe the coots got it right this time. Per the urban dictionary a tater or tator:

Noun - A person who dictates over something or someone else. Inflicting their rule over someone else, typically a husband or child (we the Daddy of Uof 5C). It has been known to cause civil unrest and uprisings. Violence usually results in the -tatee being injured.
