What should I have said?

I know a few of you have had this:

Ran into a nice guy, a store helper, he saw my clemson colors. Immediately morphed the conversation from "congrats to you tigers" to "we're proud of Dawn Staley, she's our Dabo, college All-American, Natty winner, Olympic gold medal coach" and pretty much "she's greatness on par with or maybe even above Dabo". Very nice guy, so I just let it slide.

What say some of you when this happens?

If all they can crow about is wimmins basketball, just SMH. Pathetic, really. On par with bass fishing.

I would have said maybe SC should drop football and stick with basketball.

What do I accomplish if I win an argument with this half wit. I think that you handled it well. When women’s basketball is their top performing sport ... nothing needs to be said.

GO Tigers is always a nice ‘goodbye’!

Ask him if that is on par with the bass fishing championship.

You really did do the right thing. You should always be polite until provoked... and then (especially when dealing with coots) you may unleash whatever of the True Tales Of Domination come to mind. There are so many and they all result in the desired affect in the coot in question: sputtering about women's basketball, how important women's equestrian sports are and the skill required to fish for bass. And as mentioned by others, always throw in "Go Tigers" as you turn and walk away.

Because I honestly didn't know who that was until I Googled it.

Then after his long explanation I would have nicely said "I rarely follow men's basketball much less wimmens".

I would tell him that the only reason that women's collegiate sports exist is because the gov'ment says they have to.

My answer: “well that sounds nice, but bless your hearts Dawn Staley and her championship will never equal anything Dabo does on behalf of Clemson, the university of S.C.”

I think you handled it well, with class. A knowing smile and walking away invokes an air of superiority that both belittles and confounds the antagonist.

Say: “Congrats, Coach Staley is a class act.” (I heard her speak last year and she has a lot in common with Coach Swinney regarding the way she cares for her players and their development as good people.). My dad always encouraged me to be big about small things.

Once reaching the pinnacle of success, Dabo hasn't allowed our team to slip back into obscurity after losing one key player. Also, Dabo has never sued another school over their comments. Dave Doeren is thankful for that.
