Make no mistake... Taggart isn't long for that job. They

Jun 24, 2019, 1:11 PM

already know they hired the wrong guy, and now their QB situation is dire. Before Hornibrook transferred as a graduate from Wisconsin the scholarship QB they had is Stringbean Blackman. They haven't signed a QB the last 2 classes. Just a matter of time before Taggart is escorted out.

who de-committed and they had put all their eggs in the one basket so there were no fallbacks or plan B. If FSU can't get a QB it's an eye opener that all is not well. Not sure what people have seen that makes them think Taggart is a good coach who just got put in a bad situation. I don't see that at all. He did go to a bad situation, but he's exacerbated it, too. They've just gotten worse. The players' body language, lackadaisical play, and results on the field tell me all I need to know. They're in a place I never dreamed I'd see at FSU and a lot of it is because Taggart is in waaay over his head.

This just makes you appreciate our stingy recruiting philosophy so much more. No wonder Taggert can’t get a QB signed looking at that.

2013, John Franklin III: Never played, transferred after two seasons and eventually switched positions. Now plays defensive back for the Chicago Bears.

• 2014, J.J. Cosentino: Career backup who left the program with one year of eligibility remaining.

• 2015, Deondre Francois: Two-year starter dismissed after the 2018 season because of allegations of domestic violence.

• 2015, DeAndre Johnson: Was dismissed before his freshman season began for striking a woman at a bar. Currently at Texas Southern.

• 2016, Malik Henry: Left the program during his freshman season. Now a walk-on at Nevada.

• 2017, Bailey Hockman: Redshirted as a freshman; transferred to NC State.

• 2017, Blackman: Started as a freshman, redshirted in 2018 and is FSU's projected starter for 2019.

Three quarterbacks Fisher recruited before Winston also never panned out: Clint Trickett (transferred), Jacob Coker (transferred, won a national title with Alabama) and Maguire.

If they have another performance like this:

I just don't know how long he will last. I think he is a good coach walking into the wrong situation. Still, the fans expect to win despite the hole Jimbo dug.

The FSU supporters around me said jimbo needed to go but they were shock how bad the rot had gotten.

Jun 24, 2019, 2:14 PM

If their players aren't together and don't leave it all on the field, Taggart is toast. They had serious attitude and locker room issues last year. It was pretty ugly. He has to get control of the situation. He can't blame that part of it on Jimbo this season.

I watched Hornibrook some at Wisconsin. He ain't all that and can melt down sometimes. Wisconsin has a solid environment and we'll see what happens in Tallahassee.

For the record, Oregon is my second favorite team after Clemson. For obvious reasons, I want Taggart to fail miserably at FSU. Next up, Kendal Briles?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have no idea how hot Taggart's seat is.

Jun 25, 2019, 11:48 AM

I do know that Taggart took over a team with great physical talent and did almost nothing with it. The players Taggart put on the field last year were more talented than any he's ever coached. The Noles looked terrible to start the season when they lost VT, they looked worse losing to Clemson 59-10 and finished the year losing 4 of the last five. After a spring training, a preseason and 6 regular season games, the Noles were a terrible football team.

A great coach would have done a better job with the Noles than Taggart did last year. Way back in 1977, Pell took over a talented Clemson team that had gone 3-6-2 and immediately posted an 8-3-1 record. Tommy Bowden took over a 3-8 Clemson team and immediately went 6-6.

I will be surprised if Taggart is successful at FSU, so I hope they Willie 5 or 6 years. If FSU does that, the Noles will live in mediocrity for 20 years.

Don't really know. Though I don't live anywhere near the West Coast, I've been a "Pac 12 Late Saturday Night" person for a long time. Started following when Mike Bellotti was coach.

It was funny reading here when people were fretting about DJ maybe going to Oregon. All UO fans knew he was going to Clemson. It was very obvious. Very glad he chose Clemson.

I also follow their b-ball team. Dana Altman is the most underrated college b-ball coach in America by a mile.

Jun 24, 2019, 2:27 PM

I heard on ESPNU radio this morning that James Blackman received so little coaching from Jimbo’s staff that he went onto YouTube to learn how to play QB. No joke.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The player's weren't

Jun 24, 2019, 2:42 PM

All together and leaving it all on the field when Jimbo was there. Jimbo assessed them...chose them...they're his...character and all. Will Taggert last? Well, he has the bull's eye on him, solely to take the attention off of everyone else within the FSU administration who completely and totally k-rapped the bed there.

FSU need to be very, very careful with this situation, or it will be a gift that gives for a long, long time...and it won't be a good gift. Yes, FSU has a legacy. Yea! So do Texas, USC, Florida, LSU, Nebraska, etc., etc., etc. What good has that done them? After 4-5 years, today's recruits don't care, because they weren't watching then. What happens while they're in high school is all that matters, if they didn't grow up as 'legacies'.

Read The Bleacher Report article in its entirety. The one that a half dozen folks have posted and / or copy paste. YouTube was pre FSU.

"What people don't understand is, I was never really coached to play the position before I got to FSU," Blackman says. "I used to search YouTube and watch other quarterbacks play the game and try to learn from it. It was a big step for me to even be at FSU. Jimbo did a great job helping me, sticking with me throughout the season so I didn't go out there and embarrass myself. I learned a lot from him about playing the position."

Fischer left the program a disaster but he is a very good QB coach. A QB recruiter not so much

The article mentioned that but it was Blackmon talking

Jun 25, 2019, 1:50 PM [ in reply to Re: How hot is Taggart's Seat? Well, it depends who you ask. ]

about pre-FSU (high school) where he got no coaching. He says in the article that Jimbo helped him learn a lot about he position. I'm definitely not a Jimbo fan so not defending him by nay means but just wanted to point that out.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hate when people blame Jimbo. He was a great coach

Jun 24, 2019, 2:48 PM

there always has to be a scapegoat. Jimbo even turned down the LSU job a few years ago, giving FSU another chance at getting their #### together and upping the ante on facilities. Jimbo won 29 straight games, a National Title , 2 Playoff appearances, then had 2 10 win seasons, a 7 win season, and they fired him. smh

Jimbo wasn’t fired

Jun 24, 2019, 2:52 PM

He left voluntarily for a giant fully guaranteed deal at A&M. And he saw the writing on the wall of what was coming at FSU and checked out knowing the deal with A&M was done. He certainly deserves some blame in the situation. The administration and players also deserve some blame, as does Taggart. But there is a metric ton of it to go around.

I still cannot understand the powers-that-be at Free Shoes U hiring a guy like Taggart .
He must give great interview , because it seems to me that they made a huge leap with Willie .
Maybe he puts it back together . I dunno , but he's going into season 2 looking like he's got n'er a clue as to how FSU football is supposed to operate according to tradition and expectations .
He'll get 4 years , 3 if he stays along the lines of his debut .

He inherited a program whose academic side was a mess (it does affect them on the field), a program that barely made a bowl in Fisher's last year, and an offensive line that was worse than horrible. I'm not sure how you fix that in your first year. Taggert may not be the man, but he certainly should not be judged on his first year.

Re: How hot is Taggart's Seat? Well, it depends who you ask.

Jun 25, 2019, 12:40 AM

Just on talent alone a good X/O football coach should have won 8 or 9 football games with that team .
How often do we hear " Yeah but he won with So and So's recruits " ? A bowl's almost automatic if a team as unquestionably loaded as FSU has a decent HC and support staff .
Is it all on Taggart ? You bet it is sailor . The captain is always on the official log whether the ship is sailing high , sinking or staying on course .
He better get it together FAST in Tallahassee or he'll be gone by 2021 in my opinion .

Dug ..... I have checked your old posts and I agree with you 98.34 % of the time, but here I think you have spun a prop. If FSU was loaded with talent, why did Fisher have to "buy" a game at the end of his last season to become bowl eligible? With their offensive line, they made supposedly the best running back in the country look pedestrian. They had some good players on defense, but every team does and they did not have enough. IN the past, under Bowden, FSU was bad about signing players based on their star ratings and did not always go and watch them play. They had some 5* players that couldn't play ..... a running back (James Wilder, Jr.)whose father played there was a 5* total bust. Their top linebacker, Darrell Bush (I think) couldn't run a 5.0 40.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU bought the game not Jimbo

Jun 25, 2019, 12:44 PM

He had already checked out Spurrier style by mid season knowing he had a fat check coming from A&M. He was tired of having to fight administration and boosters tooth and nail for more money which isn’t a problem at A&M.

He certainly shares some of the blame for the current quagmire they’re dealing with now, but that article floating around the internet ties it up in a nice bow and hangs all their problems on Jimbo’s head which is neither fair or accurate.

It’s a huge red flag to me that Taggart is not owning any part in their struggles last year based on his comments in that interview with Fortuna or whoever the writer was. Just sounds like excuse making. When was the last time you heard Dabo not start out with “Us coaches didn’t have them prepared enough to win today...” or something along those lines after a loss? Very telling differences to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FSU bought the game not Jimbo

Jun 26, 2019, 12:09 AM

Well, Jimbo wants everyone to believe his side of the story and Willie would like everyone to believe his side, so I guess the truth is somewhere in between. I'm not buying that money was a problem at FSU, at least for their football program. He just went somewhere where the money had already been spent and where there was plenty more. Quite frankly, I haven't heard Willie making any excuses, although I have heard a number of people making excuses for him. I guess the kind of effort they put forward this year will tell some of the story. Quite frankly, I am not losing any sleep over their struggles!

Re: How hot is Taggart's Seat? Well, it depends who you ask.

Jun 25, 2019, 8:22 AM

I think most FSU fans are fine to pass off last year as "Jimbo left us in a mess" but they wont accept a 2nd year like that. He doesnt have to win the ACC, but he needs to show some progress.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Taggart may not have been able to fix FSU in one year,

Jun 25, 2019, 9:15 AM

but what I look at is, do the players play hard for the guy? Do they look well coached and inspired? Do they have a renewed sense of urgency and energy?

The answer to all of that is a resounding NO. They quit on Fisher 2 years before he left. Once that 'who cares' culture permeates a locker room, in any sport, it's very difficult to overcome. They were just going through the motions with Fisher, and under Taggart they're even less inspired.

They gave up 525 yds and 26 pts to Samford. There was only 4:06 left IN THE GAME before FSU ever had a lead. If Samford hadn't had 5 turnovers, it would've been a loss of greater magnitude than the coots losing to the Citadel.

FSU is broken in many pieces, and Taggart isn't the man to fix it. He's the antithesis of Dabo.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's obvious that Dabo is grooming Terry Bowden to take over

Jun 25, 2019, 12:25 PM

at FSU in 2 years.
