High horse topic - the alma mater

Jan 15, 2017, 1:17 PM

Since I'm really digging deep to find something from yesterday that even slightly disappointed me, here's the only thing that I can find - our alma mater. Specifically, the number of Clemson fans and grads (I could see their class rings) who leave their hats on while singing it and then wave, empty-handed, at the end. You can see this in the video on the front page. Do they not realize that it's an homage to the cadets who would wave their caps at the end of the song? If you're wearing a hat, take it off and hold it up! This calls for some off-season education during the dark (non-football) days ahead.

I would wager we have some students now that don't know what

you are referring to when you say, "Cadet".

I am not a grad nor have I ever attended the school. I have never represented myself as ever doing so. However, through the years I have begun singing the Alma Mater because after a while you can't help but learn it. I do it correctly as a sign of respect and do notice other people doing it incorrectly. There are times when I don't even feel like I should go to homecoming games because of what it is... homecoming. That being said, there are a lot of students, grads and players that apparently don't know how it should be done or the significance of it. Now that I have opened myself up to criticism, feel free to flame on.

And you should wave your hand on "or" not "echo".

Thank you! That has been a pet peeve of mine for years.

You mean the "early" wave or the "hat" issue!

I always take off my hat and wave it, but don't wear my Clemson ring....about 2 sizes too small. I guess I do it correctly since I have been doing it 52 years as that is the way I learned it!

You do know that you can have your ring re-sized for free,

You are right! But, isn't it great that everyone feels like they can sing it, not just students and alums? And I just realized that those cadets could probably care less...they would be so proud of where we are. Yesterday was just another example...this is one old girl that is proud to be a Tiger!

I remember a guy on the field, I think it was after the Syracuse game this past season, yelling "you're all doing it wrong!!!" when most of the people put their hand up at "echo".

I wear an old baseball hat each game.

I take my hat off during the alma mater, but don't wave it at the end since it is not a cap from a military or cadet uniform. It doesn't feel right to me to wave an old ratty ball cap.

I wave my hand as if holding a cap from a uniform. It's how I was taught to do it.

I think i do it right. I hold my hat in my left hand and raise my right when singing the word o'er and not before. If I'm wrong, i have 3 children that do it wrong also.

Is your life that miserable that you have to dig deep to find something to complain about? I wasn't at the game but I can only imagine the thrill those folks had in the moment and I highly doubt they we worried about their hits or hands at the time.
