Betting on Clemson sports legal question..

Oct 16, 2018, 9:34 PM

Does anyone know the laws concerning sports betting related websites? Is it legal in South Carolina? There is an E-bay auction with domain names related to Clemson Sports betting that peaked my interest.

If she's a hollerer, she'll be a screamer.
If she's a screamer, she'll get you arrested.

I read online about the Supreme Court ruling but still couldn't find out any definitive answers about how that would affect South Carolina or betting in general online. So right now its illegal to bet on sports or have a website related to betting unless you are in Nevada, Jersey, etc?

It’s not legal in SC and likely will stay that way for the foreseeable future. You’d have to bet thru your local bookie or an international site as the prior poster mentioned.

The question isn't really the URL so much as where you host your servers. There's a thriving gambling scene in Costa Rica. My bookie operates out of there. However, he runs what I'd call a half-way shop. He has an app and posts lines in real time and takes your bet. All of that through the app. But the actual financial transactions (paying him or him paying you) is still done face to face.

The full-way would be to do all of that, PLUS handle financial transactions via credit cards or paypal or whatever. The downside to that is now you're talking about federal money laundering crimes and the FBI will jump all over it at the direction of the Justice Dept.

So, if what you're thinking is you'll buy this URL, create a bookie site out of your house with full financial transactions, then you need to stop that line of thought right now. You'd have the FBI busting down your door and seizing your assets within a month.

Another consideration, as you consider this business venture, is that wherever you live, there's already a bookie or two in your neighborhood. And they roll up to another, bigger bookie who rolls up to another one and so on all the way to Vegas (or whoever's sitting at the top bankrolling the operation on bad weeks). Just because you don't see this organization doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And, you'd be competition.

In the world of illegal sports betting, which has been around forever, most people tend to just use the existing organizations. I think it would be very difficult to kinda pick this up from scratch. Don't even get me started on automatic line-adjusting calculations based on volume and action.

In conclusion, don't do it. :)
