only happened a lot, it was almost considered an obligation. As in, family had to take care of and support family however they could. Society has obviously changed in that regard.

Well it is in the Old Testament. If a man died his brother was supposed to take his widowed sister-in-law and raise up “seed” for his brother. Maybe this guy is just being true to the Bible.
