1/3 of Tax Cuts were paid out to foreign nationals

Jan 3, 2019, 10:12 PM

Roughly a third of U.S. corporate profits basically flow to foreign nationals – which means that a third of the tax cut flowed abroad, rather than staying at home.

I thought tax cuts were for nationalism.

Jan 4, 2019, 8:13 AM

that many journalists and opinion writers have about "corporations". It appears that they believe that all corporation are publicly traded.

They take that belief and then take that view and make sweeping generalizations that are so far off the mark.

A few things to consider...

Less than 1% of corporations are publicly-traded

Less than 1/3 of non-farm jobs are in publicly-traded companies (meaning much less than 1/3 of jobs in publicly-traded companies)

So, the statement that 1/3 of the tax cut flowed to foreign nationals is patently false.

I work for a private company and took over as CEO on Tuesday. I can tell you, without a doubt, that the corporate tax cut led to more investment, more jobs, and higher wages in our operation. Just don't get me started on the tariffs though :)

Jan 4, 2019, 10:00 AM [ in reply to The sugar high of the tax cuts have passed. Growth is ]

Q2 18 - 4.2%
Q3 18 - 3.5%

Total federal direct revenue in 2016 was $3,268 BB

Total federal direct revenue in 2017 was $3,316 BB

Total federal direct revenue in 2018 was $3,328 BB

Total federal direct revenue in 2019 is estimated at $3,422 BB

Actual federal outlays:
2013 - $3,454.7
2014 - $3,506.1
2015 - $3,688.4
2016 - $3,852.6
2017 - $3,981.6
2018 - $4,107.7

Both sides of the equation need adjustment to reduce deficit

Jan 4, 2019, 12:30 PM [ in reply to How is the GDP returning to 2%??.... ]

The annual deficit gap between revenue and spending has essentially remained steady through the recovery and subsequent good economic conditions. In good economic conditions, there should have been significant deficit reduction. Neither Obama nor Trump really acknowledged the risk of deficits nor wanted to risk their own political capital addressing them.

As global and US economies slow eventually entering recession, the revenue will be flat at best. In my opinion, the tax cut was several years too early ... meaning deployed later it could have deferred or mitigated recessionary trends.

Neither political party has the fortitude ( i.e political will with their respective bases) to really reduce spending. It is likely deficits will get worse with the upcoming recession. Essentially it will take another crisis to force any sort of meaningful spending constraint or smart tax increases.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The role of the federal government has to be drastically....

Jan 4, 2019, 3:21 PM

reduced. Until there is enough agreement on that basic point and what part needs reducing, then the spending side will not change.

The full impact of the tax cut has yet to come. It will be end of this year/early 2020 until we see the full impact on jobs and wages, IMO.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just as expected....

Jan 4, 2019, 10:10 AM [ in reply to The sugar high of the tax cuts have passed. Growth is ]

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/04/nonfarm-payrolls-december-2018.html

I'll give you deficits though, since the economy is growing and wages are rising, as is inflation and interest rates. Spend exactly the same dollar amount as last year, and deficits will still grow from interest payments growing from a good economy. Double our rate of growth (theoretically doable) and we will spend more on debt servicing than on social security, or any other single item.

The fed, despite Trump's rhetoric, is doing exactly what it SHOULD be doing. If it doesn't, and rates stayed at zero like they did for years, we would be seeing a slide of the dollar, and that's the foundation of everything. The dollar gets saved at all costs.
