Offensive Keys to Beat the Wolfpack

Oct 16, 2018, 1:01 PM

As a fan base we seem to have endured the same frustrations on the offensive side of the ball. We are yet to reach our full potential as an offense. Wake forest was our best showing so far, but there still some times where I was scratching my head. Here is what I hope to see this week against NC state from the offensive side of the ball.

1) Ditch the screens
Nothing is more frustrating then throwing a screen 40 yards across the field 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 7 for no gain. It seems to happen once a drive. I would really like to see this play scratched from the play book.

2) Run on first down.
ETN is averaging a ridiculous yards per carry (9.2) and our offensive line is straight bullying people when it comes to run blocking. Set up our young quarterback with manageable 2nd and 4. It opens the play book and forces the safeties to respect the run.

3) Get rid of the ball T-Law.
Trevor's ability is mind blowing, but he still makes freshman mistakes. I too often find myself holding my breath as Trevor scrambles after having held the ball for over 7 seconds. He needs to develop the internal clock in his head and no when to throw it away. We also have been killing teams on slants, I'd love to see a little more Trevor to Renfrow this game.

4)Get the ball in the hands of Amari.
Amari Rodgers is such a dynamic playmaker who can totally exploit this wolfpack secondary. We have only seen glimpses of what he is capable of so far, he is truly underutilized in this offense. He is going to be matched up with linebackers a lot the time. I hope this is something we can take advantage of this week.

Just don't beat ourselves. But I swear, I just hope we don't pass 3 straight times to start the game. Positive yardage on 1st down is the key IMO, running the football opens up everything else down the field. We will throw screens, you can bet on that, whether they work or not, it also opens up the middle of the field.

State’s front seven are pretty good. #3 for them is a beast. Mitch will have his hands full. Their secondary sucks.
