I'm not sure how much longer I can continue paying a whopping $80/month for a 1G fiber connection. Also, I hate having to put a quarter into the slot on the side of the computer when I go to a site that isn't owned by a megacorporation.

THIS SHALL NOT STAND!!!

Honest question...

A number of providers were caught throttling speeds to specific sites or activities before net neutrality was passed (Comcast and AT&T come to mind). Why are so many people convinced that they won't do it again?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its not that they wont do it

Feb 1, 2019, 3:36 PM

Its that 99.9% of people honestly DGAF.

That's some goalpost moving man.

Feb 1, 2019, 3:36 PM [ in reply to Re: I hope to God we restore it soon...... ]

The narrative was, if net neutrality wasn't enforced, the day it ended, the Internet as we know and love it was over.

Prices would skyrocket, you'd have to pay access for basic P2P interconnects, Mom and pop websites would be crushed by corporate web traffic, you name it. The sky was falling.

There was virtually no, correction, there was zero perceptible difference to the average consumer.

It was complete alarmist behavior.

Oh, I don't disagree that a bunch of people jumped of the deep end but, at least to me, that wasn't a realistic threat anytime soon, if ever. Throttling however is a technique they have used in the past to limit or restrict access/behavior and what I expect they will do again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What ya trying to access that you're worried theyll throttle

The end-results of lifting regulations such as these

Feb 1, 2019, 3:58 PM [ in reply to That's some goalpost moving man. ]

will typically be more frog-in-water than immediate.

If drastic changes happened as soon as the Telcoms had permission, the backlash would have been too much to overcome. The regulations would have been reinstated quickly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You may or may not be right.

Feb 1, 2019, 4:01 PM

But that's absolutely NOT how it was positioned by the pro-Net Neutrality alarmists, and they weren't a fringe minority.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It still makes that annoying sound when I dial into AOL.

Feb 1, 2019, 4:03 PM

I really thought all this net neutrality stuff would fix that.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's easy to fix.

Feb 1, 2019, 4:06 PM

Just cancel that acct and get a new 3.5" diskette sent to your mom and sign up for a trial with her name.

The thing about fringes on the internet, is they can be

quite loud and seem more mainstream than they actually are.

I was against lifting the regulations due to the fact it gives ISPs what they wanted at the expense of consumers. The Pai-led FCC seems to be working as an advocacy group for ISPs rather than a regulatory agency. This should be troubling.
