My idea of a hero

Jun 6, 2016, 11:37 PM

This is my idea of a hero. One that could and should be looked up to, regardless of what your race, or religion, or whatever drum you choose to bang on, is. When Colonel Cherry was enticed by the communist to sell out his country and his comrades, he told his captors, that he would neither betray his country nor his race. A stand he payed a heavy price for. This isn't included in the story pasted below, but if you google Colonel Cherry, you'll probably find it. While you're googling Colonel Cherry check out Henry Van Meter, another great example of an American Hero. Both are men that I am proud to call heroes. While I'm talking heroes, how about those guys on this day in 1944, that landed on Normandy Beach, and many are still there. What kind of courage it must have taken to know that when that landing door opened your life might very well end. All in the service of their country.

If Ali is someones idea of a hero, well and good. I have no problem with that. After all, so many great Americans served and died to give you that right.

Boy, I sure hope this hasn't offended anybody. It wasn't intended to.

I like that...

That said, Ali was definitely a hero to black people. I think one can be a hero and not be a hero o everyone. It's all one's perspective. Hitler was a hero for a bit to Germans. Perspective. Martin Luther King was a hero to black people as well while being enemy number 1 to most people in the south. History has proven Ali somewhat of a hero in hindsight in my opinion. You do make some good points though. Your version of a hero could never be denied though. That's for sure. Speaking of unquestionable heroes. I knew the history of it, but I was reminded of it yesterday when watching a short documentary on the Doolittle Tokyo Raid. Those guys had some balls.

Hell we've got a couple of truly undeniable American heroes living in Clemson right now. Bill Funchess spent over 1000 days as a Korean pow, missed his first 4 wedding anniversaries while serving, 3 of them as a pow. Mike Hubbard is 95, was shot in the back while ambushed during a water run in a jeep on the Island of Negros in the pacific campaign, saw his best friend KIA during that ambush. Ben Skardon, enough said. Many more have passed through Clemson who are greater men/heroes/legends than The "examples" people have tossed about during this pissing match.

I had not heard of Col. Cherry before, and I really enjoyed reading that. He was definitely a hero, and so was his cellmate.
