YEAR - CHAMPION - PRESEASON RANK
2018 - CLEMSON - #2 2017 - Alabama - #1 2016 - CLEMSON - #2 2015 - Alabama - #3 2014 - Ohio State - #5 2013 - Florida State - #11 2012 - Alabama - #2 2011 - Alabama - #2 2010 - Auburn - #22 2009 - Alabama - #5 2008 - Florida - #5 2007 - LSU - #2 2006 - Florida - #7 2005 - Texas - #2 2004 - Southern Cal - #1 2003 - Southern Cal - #8 2002 - Ohio State - #13 2001 - Miami - #2 2000 - Oklahoma - #19 1999 - Florida State - #1 1998 - Tennessee - #10 1997 - Michigan - #14 1996 - Florida - #4 1995 - Nebraska - #2 1994 - Nebraska - #4 1993 - Florida State - #1 1992 - Alabama - #9 1991 - Miami - #3 1990 - Colorado - #5 1989 - Miami - #4 1988 - Notre Dame - #13 1987 - Miami - #10 1986 - Penn State - #6 1985 - Oklahoma - #1 1984 - BYU - Unranked 1983 - Miami - Unranked 1982 - Penn State - #8 1981 - CLEMSON - Unranked 1980 - Georgia - #16 1979 - Alabama - #2 1978 - Alabama - #1 1977 - Notre Dame - #3 1976 - Pittsburgh - #9 1975 - Oklahoma - #1 1974 - Oklahoma - #1 1973 -Notre Dame - #8 1972 - Southern Cal - #8 1971 - Nebraska - #2 1970 - Nebraska - #9 1969 - Texas - #4 1968 - Ohio State #11 1967 - Southern Cal - #7 1966 - Notre Dame - #6 1965 - Alabama - #5 1964 - Alabama - #6 1963 - Texas - #5 1962 - Southern Cal - Unranked 1961 - Alabama - #3 1960 - Minnesota - Unranked 1959 - Syracuse - #20 1958 - LSU - Unranked 1957 - Auburn - #15 1956 - Oklahoma - #1 1955 - Oklahoma - #2 1954 - Ohio State - #20 1953 - Maryland - #9 1952 - Michigan State - #1 1951 - Tennessee - #1 1950 - Oklahoma - #6 1949 - Notre Dame 1948 - Michigan 1947 - Notre Dame 1946 - Notre Dame 1945 - Army 1944 - Army 1943 - Notre Dame 1942 - Ohio State 1941 - Minnesota 1940 - Minnesota 1939 - Texas A&M 1938 - TCU 1937 - Pittsburgh 1936 - Minnesota
The AP POLL was born in 1936, but they didn't start a Preseason top 20 Poll until 1950. Only 11 Preseason #1's have gone on to finish #1. Thats 11 out of 69 tries. 6 teams have started the season Unranked and went on to finish #1 & be Crowned National Champions. CLEMSON being one of those 6 in 1981. Auburn would have been Unranked in 2010 Going by the Original Top 20 Preseason Poll, But the Poll had expanded years before to the Top 25 and they just snuck in at #22. (Weird because Auburn wasn't ranked going into 2013 and lost a Triller against FSU in the last BCS Championship Game)
MULTIPLE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
11 - Alabama 8 - Notre Dame 7 - Oklahoma 5 - Miami Southern Cal Ohio State 4 - Minnesota Nebraska 3 - CLEMSON Florida State Florida Texas 2 - Auburn Tennessee Army Pittsburgh LSU Michigan Penn State
With 3 Undisputed National Titles, CLEMSON IS A TRUE BLUEBLOOD PROGRAM Whether the talking heads (SEC & BIG TEN) want to admit it or not. Just look at the Schools that the Tigers are ahead of, tied with and knocking at the door of.... THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!! Go Tigers!!

Its amazing to see "lil ole Clemson " with the same amount of national championships as teams like Florida, Florida state, and Texas. It's more amazing knowing we have more titles than teams like LSU, Michigan, Auburn, and Tennessee.

I was shocked as well about Minnesota's 4 AP Titles. I mean nobody I know considers Minnesota to be a football School. I looked at the gofers football history a little bit this afternoon and They have some more legitimate titles (if it is a such a thing) before the Poll era. In 1904, 1934 & 1935. If the AP Poll would have started 2 years earlier, they'd most certainly have 2 more AP titles. The Gofers were 16-0 during that span and were pretty much considered National Champions by most everyone at the time both years. None of that made up garbage that Bama does.
I new Minnesota had won a title way back because of something the talking heads said immediately following CLEMSON's first title Win over Alabama. They noted that Dabo was only the second person ever to Win a AP Title as a Player & a Coach. They said he joined Legendary Oklahoma Coach Bud Wilkinson who won 3 AP NC Titles as a Head Coach (50,55,56) & 1 AP NC Title at Minnesota in 1936, the Polls first year. He was a Senior Quarterback that year, So he also has 2 other non-ap titles as a player

Never knew we were tied with the big goliath Texas with three titles. Seemed they were on TV all the time growing up on a national scale. Guess I expected more from them
Now we are chasing Nebraska. That sounds better than the gophers. And it's time to put the noles in the mirror

Winning back to back championships would be a BIG deal

When you win a National Championship (as we did in 1981), you legitimize your program.
When you win a second National Championships (as we did in 2016), you become a "Top 20" program.
But, when you win back to back National Championships, you become ELITE.
And we have a chance to do that this year....as we did in 2017 but were unable to do so.
Since post WWII, only 5 schools have won back to back National Championships.
Alabama Southern Cal Nebraska Oklahoma Notre Dame
Adding Clemson to that list would be simply amazing.
