Lounge Bet: Ryanadidas's 5K time

Nov 2, 2018, 7:58 AM

RyanAdidasIV is running in his first 5K tomorrow morning. I was told this morning by SarahAdidas that I would be required to run with with him. Guess my finish time. The closest to the correct time wins a prize.

A little background:
I am 34yrs old. 6ft and 220lbs. I haven't made a concerted effort to exercise since I was 22yrs old, except for a brief stint biking 10 years ago and walking 3 miles around a track 3 times a week this summer. I am stubborn enough to finish, but probably not stubborn enough to fully exhaust myself to get a "good time". Son is 8yrs old... as long as he doesn't beat me, I'll be pleased with myself. I also had to google how many miles 5km was. I will be running in an old pair of New Balance 991's that have been yard shoes for the past 5 years.

Any guesses?

Nov 2, 2018, 8:23 AM

Based on 5.8 mph 60% of the time and 3.7 mph 40% of the time for an averge of 4.96 mph.

This equates to 37.5 minutes over 3.1 miles or 5 kilometers.

i did my first a few weeks ago...

Nov 2, 2018, 8:46 AM

very little to no training. I am 5'10" 180 and exercise moderately (lift weights a few times a week and do some H.I.I.T. type stuff a few times a month).

Mine was a "trail" run at Paris Mountain in greenville. It was at night and on the trails you could only see 3 feet in front of your face looking down with a head lamp.

I did mine in 28 minutes. I was quite proud of myself.

Thoughts on the 5k: it was miserable. i cant see why anybody would do it for "fun". i paid $30, got a t shirt that i'll likely never wear, and was sore as the dickens the next morning.

so, my guess for you... 32 minutes!

I did that same race with my 10 yo son

Nov 2, 2018, 11:34 AM [ in reply to i did my first a few weeks ago... ]

We enjoyed it, except got stuck near the back at the beginning of the race, and ended up having to walk down the trail for probably the first half mile due to the logjam.

He fell twice, the second time pretty hard, and we finished at 39 minutes. My 5k times are normally around 27-29 min or so, but he slowed me down and I felt bad leaving him in the dark...at first.

How long did it take you to walk the three miles this summe?

Nov 2, 2018, 8:54 AM

Factor in chasing the 8yo for the first half and carrying/dragging him the last half and you’re probably looking at 50 minutes?

My best time at 55 years of age and 250 pounds was 47 minutes
