It's time that we go the established bball coach route.

Mar 19, 2019, 6:05 AM

We've tried the smaller mid-major route and it's not working. Look at Auburn and Tennessee. Look at our WBBs program. We aren't set up for near term success, so now is the time to make a change. But get someone that has won at a major basketball school.

So you think established successful coaches are lining up to coach at Clemson? Certainly not without a big infusion of case which is not happening .

to coach at Auburn, Tennessee and Georgia before Pearl/Barnes/Crean took those jobs?

If CBB is fired, Clemson would pay for the right coach.

Tennessee yes. They do try in that sport. The football gig is their poison dagger as it is a known toxic environment. Maybe they can clean that up. Sad seeing the lose to the coots.

Pearl took the closest opening after basically running afoul at UT. He basically took a Muscoot move but can actually coach... just not cleanly.

Crean basically saw that Indiana was unhappy with him. They fired him! From sweet-sixteen to NIT...

Oh wait, that sounds familiar except Indiana was a "elite" program as compared to a some rural school that wins a football.

Clemson is paying to keep a good coach. It isn't just the money payed to the head coach but also the assistants, etc. That show the dependency in the program as BB's pay is a great % of the BB expenditures than other programs. Will a big name program take a job with a lack of resources?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I find it hard to believe Clemson won't devote resources

Mar 19, 2019, 10:02 AM

to a potential high revenue sports program to make it successful. If a successful basketball coach told D-Rad he wants the job, but needs more resources and in turn is confident he can take the program to the next level, I doubt the answer would be no. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think a Clemson team competing for an ACC championship and making deep tournament runs would have a good ROI.

Re: I find it hard to believe Clemson won't devote resources

Mar 19, 2019, 12:21 PM

I think we are fighting the resource war within football first and foremost. We are fighting a top-level resource war and achieving a lot.

If a dollar spent on BB nets us 2 back, but 3 back on football, then it is a no-brainier. Then again, we could win 3 straight national titles in BBall but if football is 6-6 each of the three years, that AD is GONE!

Very few schools can chase and invest in all sports... and few do it well. You need that 31-0hio State, Ped State, or even Texas AM size student/alumni base and hopefully be in a big enough TV market. Even then, you have example like Maryland that chase anything, hired for premium, then fired for mediocre and look at where it landed them. The doormat for a bigger conference.

We are a much smaller school that has been extremely smart. Our ROI has been fantastic. Taking a chance on an unknown assistant, paying a premium for assistants has given us a natty. We would need that same level of Luck/Commitment for BB is not more because at least there was the support for Football.

Right now, we are able to spend 115m on our athletics or thereabouts. Spending more will have to come from somewhere (Soccer, Baseball, Golf, Track, Football) as we compete in fewer sports than most of our peers. I don't see the national media making us a Basketball elite that we can suddenly bank on a bunch of Jersey sales. Too many folks (including our own football players) have those UNC ties... because they have been nationally relevant in basketball as we have been in football. So the ROI on basketball will always be less than football.

Agreed. Point was that Auburn hired an established coach. There are plenty of successful coaches that haven't been caught cheating that we could go after. We just settle for lower than mid-major success stories.

The last time Clemson hired a men's basketball coach...

Mar 19, 2019, 9:07 AM

the approach was to set a salary limit and them go out and find someone willing to accept the job for the money Clemson was willing to pay.

This same approach was implemented in wimminz hoops and volleyball which explains, at least in part, why the programs sucked for so long.

Go out and find the best possible candidate available and then pay them whatever it takes to get them here PERIOD !!!!

Assuming that Clemson has a maximum budget for all sports combined, are you ok with taking money away from football assistants and possibly losing 1 or 2 in order to have more money available to pay a basketball coach?

If no, from where would you propose they move the money?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Money isn't the issue....

Mar 19, 2019, 9:45 AM

The issue is a willingness (or a lack thereof) to spend it.

Money is not an issue in football because Clemson knows that football pays the bills.

Money is absolutely a discussion in every other sport and must be in order to spend whatever it takes to be the best in football.

You can guarantee that there is a priority list in the athletic department in regards to who gets money next and who gets the larger shares.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Money IS the issue!

Mar 19, 2019, 10:26 AM [ in reply to Money isn't the issue.... ]

With such a mediocre basketball coach and program, Clemson is leaving millions of dollars on the table.

Time to step up and claim our fair share.

I like the idea ( should CBB be let go ...which he won't be of course ) that a younger , hungrier and on the rise coach is our best shot .
Similar to a Dabo ... great vision and an actual plan involving improvements across the board with no fear of the present and with no doubt of the future .

Are you willing to accept the baggage that comes

Mar 19, 2019, 7:47 AM

with some of the more established individuals? Finding an established, successful coach that runs a clean program and will make the jump to a program like ours is tough. If you want someone that is proven and well established you will have to accept a coach that has some smoke and fire. That's the reality.

This what I said. Hire Steve Alford now. He is available.

DRad talk to agent and get this going and then you and Brad find away to part ways. Best for both parties.

Alford has had only one bad start this year with a lot of injuries. Also played a murdious schedule.

We hire Alford we have a top 10-15 class next year like Tom Crean is having with UGA...

Yeah, that would be like UCONN going after Dabo for the football HC position...

Nova is kinda like our football program in basketball. A very, very good and dedicated program fighting above its weight and acing the patience with a young kinda unknown coach. They were a good but not great program until the 1980s with the occasional national-level great year before that.

It took Nova 12 years for Wright to payoff. Kinda like Dabo, he was going well, but not getting over the hump. Then everything clicked and he went from a top 15-25 level to a national chamption.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's an opportunity to coach in the ACC...

Mar 19, 2019, 12:48 PM

which is arguably the premier conference in college basketball year-in and year-out.

Is Clemson willing to pay for that?

Mar 19, 2019, 12:52 PM

Because contrary to what you read here, Brownell's salary isn't that much compared to what most other high major coaches make.

In addition to paying the head coach significantly more, we would also need to pay his assistants more than we currently pay ours, and provide more funding for other program needs as well.

Oh, and we would need to make regular facility enhancements and upgrades, not just a renovation every 15 years as is our recent M.O.

It appears that the MBB program is making about $3.5 million. There's some room for improve if just spent what we make on it.
