the word "fighting" from the "Fighting Gamecocks" after Saturday's game. Any truth?

I always thought the "Fighting" was referring to the Gamecock fans fighting among themselves. I've never seen much fight in the uniformed people on the field. If I were to judge them by their success on the field, I would assume they had randomly picked some of the fans in the stands to don the uniforms.

Having been taught since my early childhood to say something nice about others let me compliment them by saying they are usually the first in the barrel. Doesn't that sound so much better than saying they are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to football (and a lot of other stuff)?
