Empathy for Feaster

Jun 1, 2019, 7:07 AM

Just read some really negative comments about Feaster. I would love him to stay but see the perspective if you want to make the NFL

#2 in YPC in Clemson history
But behind #1
Won't get as many carries as, say, the Bama backup that went in the first round.
Likely feels he gets stronger as he plays more
So wants - and needs - more successive carries

The decision that lead to being drafted is worth $1.5M if he's in 3 years at $500,000 per year. It could be worth much more, $5M, $15M.

If he gets wrong, what's he at $30-$70K per year?

So, I put myself in his shoes.
Will he get the carries at Clemson to get drafted?
If not, where could he...with the right situation?
Meaning a place where the D won't just load the box,
The O line is good
They have a spot at RB or he can beat others out
He can mesh quickly with the team
He can learn the playbook - fast

If I were his family, and we decided transferring is best, I would encourage him to redshirt, learn the new team and plays, and then he could potentially get his Master's paid for.

I would love for loyalty to Clemson to put $5M NFL money in his pocket. But I would certainly look for the best path to the NFL if I was in his family's shoes.

He gave Clemson plenty. He doesnt owe us anything. I wish he would have stayed though.

I understand him transferring, but he won’t be drafted. His straight line speed is good, and he can catch, but those are the only measurables that he has. His lateral quickness is lacking, and his field vision is below average. A look at his film shows him slowing down in traffic & shying from contact. Those things are what got him to third string at Clemson. I don’t know if his shoulder injury is still in his head, or if that’s just him, but he is not NFL RB material. I greatly appreciate his contribution to the success of the football team here and wish him well though.

Say WHAT?!

Jun 1, 2019, 7:42 AM

Feaster most certainly WILL be drafted, barring a career-ending injury.

The NFL doesn't value RBs like they once did, but TF will definitely be a take in the later rounds.

Not saying he won’t get a shot as maybe UDFA, but he won’t be drafted. It’s not a shot at him, just reality

Re: Say WHAT?!

I agree. He doesn’t look like a NFL RB to me.

If he is healthy I think he will get drafted and could have a very solid career. Catching the ball out of the backfield in the NFL is huge.

His best chance

To be drafted is playing for the Tigers. I hope that he does well with his new team.

Seriously using a preseason depth chart? Here's the one from the Bama game.

Not just that one game, and when exactly did choice have a bad wheel?

Jun 1, 2019, 2:41 PM [ in reply to Re: He was 2nd string not 3rd*** ]

Even if you go with your preseason depth chart, there is that interesting word "or" by his name. That means he's tied with Choice for second string. Chill out, dude. Anybody with half a brain knows he was the #2 last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He was 2nd string not 3rd***

Jun 1, 2019, 4:05 PM

Do they? Feaster had 78 carries and Choice had 77. There was no separation between the two so you could just as easily call him our #3 guy. He only had 16 more carries than Dixon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that guy clearly doesn't know how to read a depth chart-

Jun 3, 2019, 12:42 PM [ in reply to Re: He was 2nd string not 3rd*** ]

and that the "or" means they were co at #2. They were diff backs used for diff things. LJD was 4th. LJD could have been co-2 this year with TF possibly if the coaches thought he could do what Choice was capable of last year but LJD is still unproven in my eyes. He did great but the situations he performed well in were not the say carries the others were getting.

Re: Empathy for Feaster

Jun 1, 2019, 8:15 AM

If it was me making that decision, some things I would also consider:
- I'm #2 in YPC in Clemson history
- Clemson has the NFL Scout's attention right now.
- I would be playing in front of those Scouts showcasing my ability
- I am experienced and familiar with the offense
- I would be running behind a very good and experienced offensive line
- The current coaching staff plays a lot of players and I would get to play every game

Negatives I would also consider if I transferred:
- I would not know the offense
- I would not be the guaranteed starer
- If the offensive line is not a strong unit risk of injury increases
- If the team is not a winner will I get the looks from the Scouts I need?

Personally I don't have a problem if he wants to transfer. I do have a problem if he transfers to our hated rival.

Don’t forget about coaching

Jun 1, 2019, 8:51 AM

If he has the right personality, he could be a good college coach and make comparable money to a late round draft pick by 30. But you need a connection and somebody to give you a chance. I think transferring probably burns that bridge, if only because that same chance in the future would now go to somebody like Adam Choice.

Good post. He should also look at the exposure he would get at Clemson vs some average program like the Coots.

Exposure relative to playing the coots is the paparazzi taking a picture of Karen Gillan stepping in dog crap.

You make great points here. The only problem with him staying at Clemson is he will be the same #3 on the depth chart. He’s not going to beat out Lyn-J.

I really don't know what I would choose if I were him. I do believe that he will be drafted and can make a NFL team. One of the positives that you quoted is the biggest negative for him in my opinion. The fact that the coaching staff plays so many players means the the limited number of carries he would get will be even lower. I appreciate the hard work that he has put into our program and the fact that he has been a good teammate/student athlete without the drama you see from other teams

I agree, most often he would be handed or passed the ball from (or blocking for) a player that has all scouts watching him.

I'll support Feaster wherever he chooses to play his last year

Jun 1, 2019, 8:39 AM

except for one school. Out of all 100+ teams that likley would want him, if he chooses the RIVAL of the school from which he graduated....well that is an intentional insult, IMO.

How can a Clemson fan respect that decision?

I believe Feaster should give Kentucky a look, replacing Snell as the featured back. Perfect fit, IMO.

I think that if Feaster stayed at Clemson, hit the weights, and played all out this coming season he would be drafted to the NFL. Transferring will be a real dice roll for him. What top program is he going to transfer to that doesn't already have excellent RBs??
