If we're being honest

Dec 11, 2018, 2:33 PM

The defensive line is going to take a step back next year. Justin Foster, Nyles Pinckney, Jordan Williams, and Xavier Thomas will likely be the starters for week 1. It is critical that all of them take the next step in their developments over the course of the spring and summer. Clemson also needs KJ Henry and Logan Rudolph to continue to develop at DE. Xavier Kelly and Darnell Jeffries will be entering spring as the 2nd group at DT, and neither of them have much experience. Defensive line recruiting hasn't been great this year, especially when compared to last year. Tyler Davis is a much needed prospect that can probably have an immediate impact. With that said, Tre Lamar, Isaiah Simmons, and K'Von Wallace all need to come back next year. Worst case scenario is that all 3 of them depart early for the NFL. That would be disastrous for the defense next year. Clemson needs all 3 of them to return if they want to have another elite defense in 2019. What are the odds that all 3 return? Simmons needs to look at how patient Dorian O'Daniel was. Wallace needs to see what happened with Van Smith leaving early. Hopefully Lamar returns as well, even thought I believe he would get a quality draft grade given his size and athleticism. Also, I would love to finally see Shaq Smith, Tre Lamar, and Isaiah Simmons starting at LB next year. Very few teams could match that size and athleticism at LB.

Trotsky was okay. Unfortunately, he didn’t take over after Lenin died, and instead Stalin took over and exiled him, then later assasinated him. The world would look much different today if Trotsky took over instead of Stalin.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trotsky was not a nice guy. Not a person to admire.

Dec 12, 2018, 12:47 PM

Vladimir Cherniaev, a leading Russian historian, sums up Trotsky's main contributions to the Russian Revolution:

Trotsky bears a great deal of responsibility both for the victory of the Red Army in the civil war, and for the establishment of a one-party authoritarian state with its apparatus for ruthlessly suppressing dissent.

He was an ideologist and practitioner of the Red Terror.

He despised 'bourgeois democracy'; he believed that spinelessness and soft-heartedness would destroy the revolution, and that the suppression of the propertied classes and political opponents would clear the historical arena for socialism.

He was the initiator of concentration camps, compulsory 'labour camps,' and the militarization of labour, and the state takeover of trade unions.

Trotsky was implicated in many practices which would become standard in the Stalin era, including summary executions.

Xavier Thomas is going to be a major disruptor the next 2 years. With his limited playing this year it seemed every time he was on the field he was either sacking the QB or making the QB pay for the throw. My bet is he will leave Clemson as the all time sack leader after 3 years. He's only going to get better and it's really hard to double team the DE's coming off the edge.

Re: If we're being honest

Dec 11, 2018, 4:13 PM

I believe XT will have a double digit sack season. He’s going to be great. But, will Foster or Henry be as good as Clelin or Austin? Probably not. Will Pinckney and Williams be as good as Christian and Dex? Definitely not.

Which is why I believe returning Lamar, Simmons, and Wallace will be critical for the defense to stay elite again next year. Hopefully the all come back.

Re: If we're being honest

Dec 11, 2018, 8:20 PM

I think XT might end up our GOAT DE and it only takes one to disropt a play.

I think the improvement on offense will more than offset pur losses and let's remember BV is a master of the rebuild. If the D is off, we may look more like Oklahoma next year and that will at least be fun to watch.

Re: If we're being honest

Dec 11, 2018, 8:28 PM

Coot or not it’s a good point and is relevant to our 2019 goals. The DEs will see a minor drop off in my opinion. I think XT will be better than any DE on roster this year but total depth will not be as good. KJ steps in on the other end with Foster, Rudolph, Mascoll, etc making decent depth.

My concern is DT for sure. Nyles and someone will not be anywhere near talented as DexStar and CW but who would. Problem is depth again where Huggy and NP as great depth. Hopefully Kelly takes a step and Johnson coming in as a freshman will be as good as advertised.

Interesting debate is secondary. If Mullen comes back it will be stellar with Charleston being an immediate contributor in the secondary. Mullen leaves and hopefully Booth is elite and our 4 stars from last class step up. Either way I think we improve in secondary which will help line concerns.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If we're being honest

Dec 12, 2018, 9:26 AM

I think Mullen is going pro. But, I think AJ Terrell, who’s having a great year, will replace him. There will be so much competition for br #2 corner spot with McMichael, Goodrich, Williams, Booth, and Sheridan Jones. I’m excited for the future at CB. They’ve recruited the position really well.

Dec 12, 2018, 9:21 AM [ in reply to Re: If we're being honest ]

I agree with everything you say about XT. He has future top 10 potential. KJ Henry has enormous upside as well, and I think he will be really good at some point. Dex and Christian are one of the best DT duos in college football history. Pinckney and Williams can’t replicate that. I’m sure they will be good, but Dex is projected top 10 and Christian is projected first round.

a defense with all the talent coming back on offense. But let’s be honest here again. How many seasons was BV’s defense supposed to take a huge step back and ended up being a top ten defense anyway? Honestly you suck at this game.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Since we’re being honest we may not need much of

Dec 12, 2018, 9:28 AM

The offense is going to be incredible. The problem is that Clemson has a top 3 defense, so when I say they will take a step back, people are assuming that I mean the defense will be bad. I don’t believe that lol. I’m just saying the defense won’t be top 3, which is reasonable considering who all is leaving, and who all could potentially leave.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well you can’t have it all every year and honestly

Got several kids coming in next year, of which a couple should transition to the DT spots. Rueben, Cash, Johnson and Ohrohoro have the "beginning size" and if they come in January, 8 months in the training program and they could all hit the 300 range fairly quickly. Williams, Pinkney, Jefferies and Kelly don't have to be all world, but they are pretty good. Leave us not forget that every team we play do not bring back all 5 starting OL, they will have new faces too. Clemson's defense next year will take a small step back but the offense should take a couple of steps forward. Will still be in the hunt.

little returning. We only have 4 returning DTs and one is a former 270 lb DE.
