Shutdown will likely cost me my job. I blame Democrats.

Jan 16, 2019, 1:20 PM

We are bickering over something that had bipartisan support under W.

It is 1/1000 of the Federal budget.

If walls don't work and are immoral, why aren't Democrats proposing we demo the hundreds of miles of wall we already have? They aren't.

Yet since most of my work comes from EPA, I am sitting in my office twiddling my thumbs. Two to three more weeks of this will have me in the unemployment line.

Government can no longer compromise and make deals.

Jan 16, 2019, 1:25 PM

They had a deal a year ago, but that got dumped. Bipartisanship is dead.

Why would it cost you your job?

Jan 16, 2019, 1:26 PM

It's not like this will go on forever.

I'm an engineer that bills my time just like a lawyer or CPA

Jan 16, 2019, 1:33 PM

If I am just billing my time to the company overhead, I am of no value and will get canned.

I have funded projects, but there is only a limited amount I can do without EPA input.

The company may try a furlough so I can come back when the shutdown ends, but they would be paying insurance on an employee that is not working. Not what they want to do long term.

Thousands and thousands of people in my position.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, but this won't go on forever

Jan 16, 2019, 1:37 PM

Surely their contract with the EPA is worth waiting a couple weeks.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The company won't lose the contract if they fire me....

Jan 16, 2019, 1:40 PM

and I would likely get re-hired.

But no one knows where this is going. It's approaching uncharted territory.

There is a bipartisan bill for opening the government already sitting in the Senate. McConnell will not bring it up for vote, we he has to pass it because Trump said he won't sign it.

Democrats are bad...

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There was also a bipartisan bill in 2018

Jan 16, 2019, 1:37 PM

that would have provided $25 billion in wall funding for a multi-year DACA extension, both of which were supported by most Americans.

Trump said he'd veto that, and it failed the Senate by 6 votes.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If I recall, Trump was open to regularizing few million DACA

Jan 16, 2019, 1:44 PM

but the hangup was the nature of the regularization. Democrats wanted a quick path to citizenship.

It made no changes to

the visa lottery or chain migration. So, he said he'd veto it. That's $25 billion and 12 months worth of construction down the tubes, because he couldn't get the whole enchilada in one bipartisan bill.

And here we sit a year later, fretting about whether the opposition party will give him $5 billion in wall funding (and whether Clemson football likes flaccid hamburders.)

For some perspective......

Jan 16, 2019, 1:39 PM [ in reply to Re: Shutdown will likely cost me my job. I blame Democrats. ]

$5.7 billion is roughly 3.5 DAYS of INTEREST on our national debt. Another perspective, if the federal reserve simply reversed its last rate hike today, by the end of next week we have wall funding in the bag.

Trump can sign any number of bills that would easily pass with bipartisan support and would reopen the government. He refuses to because as always, it is his way or screw everyone. That sucks if you lose your job and I really hope that doesn't happen to you but the man-child throwing a tantrum is what put us in this position.

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble and hope

it resolves in a positive manner for you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure you do, but...

Jan 16, 2019, 2:15 PM

Trump said he would own the shutdown, and he's the sole person to blame. They could pass a spending bill to keep government open and people paid while working out a deal separately.

Hope you don't lose your job. But if you do, you're putting the blame in the wrong place. This imbecile wants government shut down for a variety of reasons.

Is dependent upon EPA contracts, then re-evaluating political positions to align with your own self interests should be considered.

Regardless good luck and let’s hope everyone in DC sees the benefits of reopening the government.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So republicans don't belong at EPA or with EPA contracts?

Jan 16, 2019, 2:34 PM

Really?

You do realize Richard Nixon created EPA?
