I like how someone else has a drinking problem . .

but it's not their fault. It is your fault for them drinking, as they "have a problem". Explain this to Tiger . . . and me. SMH. No one ever does anything wrong anymore, it's always some else's fault.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

They run a public service one here about the person announcing to friend they've decided to have a gambling problem. Like they are announcing they won something or are getting engaged. Then all their friends act excited

Just to help you out. Alcoholism was recognized as an illness way back in 1959. Where people get confused is rather simple, "How can someone pickup an illness off the shelf?"

On the surface that seems a fair question, but on closer examination one can easily see how. The difference between an alcoholic and other drinkers is the phenomenon of 'craving'. For some (1 in 10) alcohol effects a part of the brain that controls motor nerves (breathing, blinking..etc). Therefore, for the true Alcoholic that "craving" originates in the part of the brain that represents a psychological need to survive.

Ask yourself this question, "Why would some people drink until it kills them?".

Who fault is it when you get pnuemonia, or cancer, or crohns, or manic-depression?

Alcoholism isn't a moral issue. It's an physical/psychological illness.

Look it up and I'm sure you'll agree.

As an illustration, someone gets drunk at a ball game and starts a fight. They are embarrassed and resolve never to drink at ball games anymore. That's not an alcoholic...that's an aszhole. :)

As someone who has been close to it

You're right in most of your points. I'd add this. I think in the beginning the drinking is a choice, at some point alcohol takes over and it's no longer a choice for the person. Many alcoholics have to drink or they risk withdrawals and potential seizures, or even death. Catch 22 without medical help

I agree with you. As an example of how serious this disease is, here is an exercise:

Take 20 hardcore Alcoholics and put them in a room. For 2 weeks feed them, water them and leave them alone.

Now take 20 hardcore Heroin addicts and put them in a room. For 2 weeks feed them, water them and leave them alone.

In 2 weeks the Heroin addicts will be miserable, cranky, but alive.

In 2 weeks 1/2 the Alcoholics will be dead and the other half will be hospitalized for brain seizures (cerebral scar tissue) and Delirium Tremens.

It's actually very tragic.

Very good analogy

Only two withdrawals kill - alcohol and benzodiazepines
