Happy Carolina Day!!

Jun 28, 2018, 6:34 AM

On this day in 1776 Colonial Patriots on Sullivan's Island defeated the British Navy as it tried to enter Charleston harbor with 9 ships and 2,000 troops. At this time the British Navy had not lost a battle in over 500 years. Fort Sullivan (now called Fort Moultrie) was able to withstand the cannon fire from the British ships because the walls of the fort were made out logs from palmetto trees. The logs were very spongy and were able to absorb the impact of the cannon balls as they hit the walls of the fort. That is why we have a palmetto tree on our state flag.

One week later (July 4, 1776) the 13 colonies declared independence from England. Our victory on Sullivan's Island gave the delegates from the 13 colonies confidence we could win the war our for independence from England.

His pension application discusses it.

When I read "Happy Carolina Day"

I thought it was going to refer to June 26th, as in 6-26, which I assumed was the coots record losing streak in some sport. It was pretty believable.
