Greatest football rivalries by decade

Jul 21, 2019, 3:34 PM

For the past five years college football’s top rivalry has been Clemson and Alabama. Perhaps this will continue.

Neverthemore, and it being still over a month until kickoff, I am starting a list of the best rivalries by decade ... in all of college football. This list is not necessarily correct, but is a starter list, a list to improve upon

1870s ... Princeton and Pennsylvania
1880s ... Harvard and Pennsylvania
1890s ... Harvard and Yale
1900s ... Harvard and Yale
1910s ... Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt
1920s ... California and Stanford
1930s ... Pittsburgh and Chicago
1940s ... Army and Notre Dame
1950s ... Oklahoma and Notre Dame
1960s ... Texas and Arkansas
1970s ... Oklahoma and Nebraska
1980s ... Miami and Notre Dame
1990s ... Florida State and Nebraska
2000s ... Alabama and Louisiana State
2010s ... Alabama and Clemson

I am somewhat confident about the 1900s and the 2010s ... with the rest, please rearrange. Please ... I need some time filler until the kickoff!

In 2018 I attended the Samford/Citadel game. As the game wound down the Citadel crowd was yelling “We want Alabama”.

As a Nole, hard to pick between FSU/Miami and FSU/uf.

But, I would go with FSU/uf. The feelings Nole fans have against uf, especially with Spurrier being there and throwing gas on the fire, made the uf game even more a hated rivalry than Miami.

Miami was more a rivalry of mutual respect. uf was far more about hatred.

I ran into a nice Miami fan (who thanked Clemson for getting Golden fired). He said they despise UF and they respect FSU. You guys never stopped playing them.

easy to forget now, but Florida and Tennessee had some

games. And they usually had national implications.

Back in the 90s.

Yep and FSU-Miami was better in the 80s. Clemson-GA in the 80s too.

Nebraska-FSU only happened twice in the 90s so hardly a rivalry

USC/Notre Dame should be there. The 1970s May have been the best decade for that as a rivalry ... ?

Just did a quick search on a hunch, and perhaps not exactly pertinent, but "...in 1890, the Gophers played host to Wisconsin in a 63–0 victory. With the exception of 1906, the Gophers and Badgers have played each other every year since then. The 128 games played against each other is the most played rivalry in Division I-A college football." Also, "The Golden Gophers claim seven national championships: 1904, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941, and 1960." I'd have to believe that during the '30s the rivalry between the Gophers and the Badgers was pretty intense.

And I remember when the Gophers under Lou Spppholtz kinda' kicked our rear end in a 1985 bowl game, what was it - the Independence Bowl, or something?

Ni, Lou had left for ND and the new guy Gutekuntz coached that game. Idiotic halfback pass play might have cost us that game. They tried to hit Rodney. I forgot who threw it.

Holtz had Rickey Foggie from Laurens at QB

Jul 21, 2019, 9:00 PM [ in reply to Re: I thought USC/Notre Dame would be there ]

and in '86 got Tony Rice, who Danny wanted bad, to go to
Notre Dame. Seems Lou recruited South Carolina better when
he was with other teams than he did while at South Carolina.
Should be noted that the Gophers were put on a 2-year probation
in the early 90s including bowl ban from recruiting violations
during the Holtz era.

That’s cool aboutMinnesota and Wisconsin. I almost put Minnesota in the 30s with Pittsburgh, not Chicago.

My list is made totally from my imagination and very likely serves (best) as a discussion starter. Your teams are a good suggestion fora super reason, that being that they actually teed it up against each other ... some on my list are rivalry by reputation only.
