For You Old Tigers that remember...

Jan 20, 2019, 8:15 AM

This day/night back in 1977 a few students and some professors were ice skating on the reflection pond in front of the Cooper library.

It barely got above freezing for about 5 days straight in January of 1977 in Tiger Town.

I remember it well. A bunch of people when and got ........

ice skates and were renting them for use. That's how thick the ice had become - looked and behaved like a real skating rink.

Sure is hard to walk by there in the summer now, for example, and picture that!

I remember it well too. My senior year. Watched others.

I recall wondering where the ice skates came from.
Gotta give those entrepreneurs credit.

Januery of '66 when it was below 0 degrees and I could scrape ice from the inside of the outer wall of my Tin Can room.

I was on second floor of D but don't remember the room #. That night guys on my floor poured water out the window and blocked the entry into the small parking area toward the quad as the water froze from the ledge to the ground.

At the time I was impressed by their entrepreneurial skill. Yet, even more "Where did those skates come from? Who would bring skates to Clemson?"

Re: What I remember is more wintry weather

Jan 20, 2019, 8:01 PM

We've had some big cold waves like the one in '77 - also the 15-18" snow that paralyzed the East Coast in '86 or '87.

But, growing up in Clemson in the '50s & '60s, I definitely remember more frequent snows. We could almost count on 2 or 3 good ones every year. A lot of residents talked about it - "Where's the snow we used to get?"

Those who seemed to know always said putting in Lake Hartwell had a kind of mitigating role on the area's snowfall. Normally, you'd think adding a lake would create more "lake effect" snow, but they said Hartwell actually warmed our atmosphere and made snow less likely.

I'm no meteorologist, but that's what they said. I just know that by the '70s, the Clemson area seemed to get fewer & smaller snows - as a rule. Occasionally, there's always an exception - like in the mid '80s.

I was there from 83-86. One of the things I really looked forward to was experiencing a few big snow events while there. Had several "potential snows" but NEVER EVEN MISSED ONE DAY OF CLASSES!

Graduated in Dec 1986. Winter of 1987---HUGE SNOW STORM! Gotta laugh about it:<)

I was in high school then but I remember the weather that week. We were supposed to have exams but they kept canceling school. It would warm up just enough by afternoon that we had basketball practice and the Tuesday night games but then the roads would refreeze overnight. Didn't know it back then, but we were experiencing what it was like to be a Tarheel, going to school just for basketball with no classes interfering.
