Anyone else feel like heisman has lost meaning since DW4 got

Dec 8, 2018, 5:44 PM

Passed up for Jackson? Clearly the best player was not selected that year and it’s forever tarnished for me.

I just don’t care anymore.

The Heisman lost its meaning when someone with the character of Newton won it, followed by the likes of Manziel, Winston, and Mayfield.

You know. That media popularity contest that Northeastern and Midwestern “journalists” weigh in on that doesn’t include bowl game performances.

#whatajoke

Still can’t believe CJ or Woody wasn’t INVITED!??? That lost it for me.

Not at all. I think this is a good one this year. I think it will be great when TL wins it before he leaves too. I think they are realizing to vote later now.

They voted later this year already. It's night and day already compared to when they made that Deshaun mistake. They mentioned on tv the other day how people are now voting later.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lost value long before DW4

Dec 8, 2018, 5:53 PM

...but that was a chance for them to try & redeem it that they completely blew.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Deshawn got hosed because most vote too early. They should

Dec 8, 2018, 6:19 PM

wait until all conference championship games are played before you can cast your ballot. It really is a joke. George Rogers won it the year Hershal carried GA to a National Championship. Also Hershal had about 100 less yards than Rogers but one more touchdown. The worst is when Paul Horning won it on a 2-8 Notre Dame team against Johnny Majors at Tennessee and Jim Brown at Syracuse. I expect to see the Alabama qb win it tonight but I think the Oklahoma qb deserves it.

Rogers deserved it. He was the whole team. He had no help.

I've been thinking about that this afternoon and I tend to agree , but then I think we all might feel some vindication if T Law can win it a couple of times .

Dec 8, 2018, 7:24 PM

They should just call it what it is . . the ESECSPIN and other media popularity award. Has nothing to do with the original meaning of the award any longer.

Herbstreit said on Gameday that between 10%-12% of voters sent in their ballots early. Pollack then said they should be stripped of their vote. Not sure how to fix the award, but it has definitely lost luster in the past 10 years

Dec 8, 2018, 7:58 PM

They said when Lamar Jackson won there was close to 60% in the same time. At least it's getting better. Still, that 10% may just give it to Tua. I think Tua should be third n voting.

I only read this because it was downing that meaningless "award". I have no respect for the voters or the award. No character required for the voters or the "winner". Lost its true value some years ago and now I just hope they keep screwing it up so it has no meaning to anyone.

Not that I am old and grumpy mind you...

drive a popularity contest before a game is played, it's over. Also crazy to vote before ALL games have been played.

Heisman was lost when they let everybody and their brother have a vote. I’m sorry, but it is so watered down with people who do not understand the true meaning of a what Heisman winner should be like having a vote. When I hear people on radio and tv say they have a vote, then I hear what comes out of their mouth I am dumbfounded.

I lost all respect for the "award" when that happened. Not even interested in it now. It's a sham, and it's very biased, since so many of the voters are not from our conference, and they have bias towards "their" conference teams. maybe, one day it will be more fair, but don't hold your breath.

I agree with you; character has never been a consideration to Heisman voters.

But i have to speak up with faint praise for Geo. Rogers. I had no personal insight to his life, but i have been told before by old skool Gamecock fans that Rogers never used nose candy before Black Magic Joe abused him so badly during his Heisman year. Running into the line 35-40 carries per game killed the poor guy and earned him a Heisman, a first round pick and permanent nerve damage.

If Clemson ever does have a player who wins the Heisman, i hope we do more for him than put his name on the stadium wall, name a trashy street for him, and give him the privilege of hawking his autograph for $5 a pop during all home games.

The best players in football are on the line as a unit. No such thing as a best player in football; only a best team. Heisman should be an award for best team as decided on the field.
