I think truth be told, TDP had his eye on the financial books and figured Dabo was a real cheap way to finish off the season with a "good character" guy and not mess anything up worse than it already was. I expect TDP would fess up to that in private conversation.

Dabo is about the most, or certainly one of the most unbelievable rags to riches stories in American history. I sure hope he never leaves and eventually gets planted up there in the cemetery above the stadium.

With the pressure on AD's in today's P5.. which AD in his right mind would hire a non-HC, non-OC for a P5 HC slot. With the $$$ and pressure today, just don't see it happening. And it's even more than the $$$ and the pressure, you've got to have a Dabo already on the staff. If you know of one, there are some P5 schools that would back up a Brink's truck to your house if you'll connect them to the Dabo hiding in the weeds.

Many programs cycle through coaching failures because they are uncreative and non-intuitive when hiring a coach. An ideal candidate is sometimes a Dabo, a salesman.

TDP saw terrific potential in Dabo. Did he know how great a coach Dabo would be? Maybe not. But plenty of blue chippers have been busts. TDP knew Dabo personally and had watched his passion and work ethic. I don’t think TDP thought Dabo’s hire was such a gamble, nor was he looking for a cheap way out.
