Clemson Basketball player in NBA

Mar 3, 2019, 9:15 PM

Pitiful!! Brownell is a nice guy
He is a fine looking man
He dress well
Dabo like him
He might develope good men
......
Clemson needs and deserves
A Good Coach
A Good Recruiter
A Coach with Passsion and Energy

If he is such a great guy then put him in a press box but not on the sidelines Clemson needs a Basketball Coach like Dabo and Brett are on our football team. Both might have gotten T up or even kick out of the game last night but the players would have seen what passion looks like. Clemson deserves better than Brad Brownell. Make the change.

No they don’t!

Mar 3, 2019, 9:40 PM

Why does Clemson deserve better? They hardly ever fill up the stadium, The football players root for the other team, and it hardly gets any attention from sites like Tigernet whose top 3 articles are about FB when the Basketball team just played their biggest game of the year.

People would fill LJ if we had a consistently good product.

That's pretty much the difference between decent fan

support and great fan support though. Say what you want about the coots, but they have great fan support in football. They endure mediocrity pretty close to the level of our basketball team under Brownell nearly ever single year, but they still show up on Saturday's to tailgate in that dump of an industrial park and pack out that dump of stadium to cheer on their team.

there is no comparison in fan support of football

good fanbases come to the games no matter what to support their teams. Clemson is better than that and we should be ashamed of ourselves if we are that type of bandwagon fan base.

in anticipation of a great year based on last year's performance. Clemson has typically had good attendance or not based on the success and excitement of the team. It's not a myth that consistent winning will get fans to come out.

I guess you don't followed Clemson under the Barnes and OP eras LJ packed way more often. I guess you're also new to sports generally. People attend sports more often in higher numbers when they have hope and excitement.

tournament with zero NBA players than not making the tourney but every 5-7 years and sending a player to the NBA every year... but the unfortunate truth is that Brownell does need to make improvements in the program to be competitive year in and year out so that we are making the tournament more often than not... the OP is really being a jug head but there is some truth in needing improvements on the court...

Why is it all Brownell's fault?

Mar 4, 2019, 10:42 AM

Do you feel that the athletic department is providing enough resources for the program to be consistently successful?

Re: Why is it all Brownell's fault?

There is a very fine line between what some of you want and what we actually have. There is nothing major wrong with the Clemson basketball program. Nothing that a big timer can’t cure. The task is .... go get that player!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As the HC for the past 8 seasons, the health of the program

Mar 5, 2019, 12:26 PM [ in reply to Why is it all Brownell's fault? ]

is all on Brownell. If he needs something from the administration, he needs to package his request and go get it. If he needs staff or assistant coaches, he needs to package his presentation and go get them. If he needs players, he needs to package his presentation and go get them. He's in charge of player development and retention, he's in charge of marketing because the best marketing is on display by what happens on the court and in the wins and losses.
If players are not making the plays, he needs to get better players. If players are not understanding his concepts, he needs players that will understand his concepts or he needs to adapt his concepts to the strengths of the players that he has or can go get.
I cannot think of one thing that Brownell has to deal with that is completely out of his control. IF there is, I would surmise that it only fulfills a minimum to the overall picture...

In my estimation, everything about the program now rests on his shoulders, and he is paid handsomely to shoulder that responsibility. I doubt that he thinks that he can't shoulder the responsibility, but results are not working in his favor, so what is the program to do? 8 seasons is plenty of enough time and recruiting classes to show progress... I just don't think that mostly finishing #6 or lower in the conference is showing progress...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You make it sound like Brad gets what he asks for

Mar 5, 2019, 3:03 PM

from the athletic department. That simply isn't true.

He has had to scratch and claw for everything we have now in terms of facilities, assistant coach salaries, support staff, social media team, etc. And almost all of those things he didn't get until year 6 or 7 at the earliest. Some of those things he's still waiting for.

I posted here recently about Clemson's basketball budget compared to the rest of the ACC. We are way, way behind most of the conference in terms of basketball spending. In fact, we are at the bottom.

You mentioned that Brownell is paid "handsomely." Yes, his $2.5 million a year is a lot of money compared to what the average American makes, but it puts him 9th among ACC coaches in terms of salary.

This notion that Brad has been given wonderful administrative support, the best facilities money can buy, and a salary among the conference's highest is simply FALSE.

I don't know if he gets what he wants or if he even

Mar 5, 2019, 5:06 PM

asks for anything, but all the previous coaches had the same issues to deal with, but put a more consistent team on the court except for Shyatt. this season and last season are Brownell's best but he has not set himself up for success beyond this season because we will have either have Trapp playing out of position running the point or having the point manned by a true freshman. We lose tremendous amount of low post play which means we will be running a lot of perimeter sets. Kudos to Brownell for getting the transfers, DeVoe and Grantham that lead to last season's success, but without DeVoe and Grantham, even the transfers have had a tough year with at least 1 future NBA player and possibly 2 if Reed finds a home at the next level...

If you want to absolve Brownell of any responsibility, please do... but who else has a bigger hand in the inconsistency of the program over the last 8 seasons than Brownell?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It has had many moments different but that shouldn't

Mar 5, 2019, 1:34 PM

preclude wanting more and better moments now. If we looked at other areas of life as if the status quo is sufficient, we wouldn't have central heating and running water. Life and basketball is about making progress and at some point, Radakovich is going to have to decide if the program is having enough moments or not...
